Effect of Datura Alkaloids and Gamma Radiations on Some Morphological Features and Yield of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during the period from February to May 2006 to study the effect of different doses of datura alkaloids and gamma radiation on germination, growth, morphological features and yield attributes of tomato. The experiment comprised of 5 treatments on tomato seeds viz., control (no application of datura alkaloids or gamma radiation), 6 hours seed soaking in datura extract (6 hr SSDE), 12 hr SSDE, 18 hr SSDE and 200 Gy gamma radiation. Results revealed that the treatments had significant effect on all the parameters studied expect number of branches plant^-1 and number of fruits plants^-1. The dose of 6 hr SSDE produced the highest percentage of seed germination, survival percentage, individual fruit weight, total fruit weight plant^-1 and fruit yield (t ha^-1).

Objectives:

The objectives were to study the effect of different doses of datura alkaloids and gamma radiation on germination, growth, morphological features and yield attributes of tomato and to find out the optimum doses for better growth and yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out with tomato genotype CLN-2413 at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during the period from February to May 2006. The experiment comprised of 5 treatments on tomato seeds viz. control (no application of datura alkaloids or gamma radiation), 6 hour seed soaking in datura extract (6 hr SSDE), 12 hr SSDE, 18 hr SSDE and 200 Gy gamma radiation. Unit plot size was 4 m × 3 m. The soil was thoroughly mixed with well rotten cowdung @ 10 ton ha^-1. Urea, TSP and MP were applied at the rate of 226, 222 and 250 kg ha^-1 respectively. Thirty day old healthy seedlings of tomato genotype were transplanted in the experiment plot in the afternoon of 2 March, 2006 with a spacing of 50 cm × 50 cm. Immediately after transplanting the seedlings were properly watered. Data on morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically following two factor experiment in RCBD with the help of MSTAT computer packages (Russell, 1986). The mean values of the treatments were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
