Nature of Pollination in Brassica Campestris

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The nature of pollination in B. campestris L. was studied using two yellow- seeded and three brown-seeded genotype. All the genotypes showed highest siliqua and seed setting under open pollination and lowest under bud selfing yellow- seeded genotype Sampad waa less affected by individual bud selfing compared to the other yellow and brown-seeded genotypes. The yellow-seeded genotype Sampad has been considered as highly self-compatible and self-pollinated and the brown-seeded genotype Tobin as highly self-incompatible and cross-pollinated.

Objectives:

To investigate the nature of pollination in different brown and vellow-seeded types of B. campestris.

Methodology:

This experiment involved two yellow seeded, viz., Sampad and M -334-8- y, and three brown- seeded, viz. TS -72, Tobin and M-321-B, genotypes of B, campestris. Among the genotypes Sam- pad and TS-72 are the released varieties of Bangladesh. M-334-8-Y and M- 321 B are the developed lines of an interspecific cross of B. Juncea x B. campestris and selected for B. campestris type. Tobin is the released variety of Canada. All the genotypes were raised in the experimental farm of the department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during 1986 -87 growing season. Proper cultural and managemer.t practices were followed for raising a good crop. Ten plants of each genotype were randomly selected for the studv, There treatments, viz, individual bud selfing, whole inflorescence selfing and open pollination, were applied on each genotype. For each treatment one primary branch of a plant was used. In individual bud selfing five buds of a selected branch were individually isolated by small bag made of polythene. Polythene bags were removed after four days of the opening of flowers. For whole in- florescence selfing paper bag was used to Isolate the whole inflorescence of a branch. Paper' bags were removed after five to six days and the immature buds were clipped off. In open pollination one branch of the same plant was allowed to open pollination. Number of siliqua and seed set per siliqua under different treatments were recorded. Number of ovules, which was expected to produce seeds, were counted based on the number of stalk of hilum on the placentae. Percent sillqua set was calculated based on the number of flowers used in the treatment and seed set based on the number of ovules per siliqua.
