Adoption of Improved Package of Practices for Transplant Aman Rice Cultivation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The paper examines adoption level of improved package of practices for T. Aman rice cultivation in Gouripur Upazila of Mymensingh district. Data were collected from 200 farmers following three-stage random sampling technique using interview schedule during January to May 2000. Eight recommended practices were selected to measure the adoption level. Considering overall adoption level, farmers categories were : 5 percent non-adopter, 62 percent low adopter, 24.5 percent medium adopter and 8.5 percent high adopter. Adoption level of eight practices such as modern variety, line transplanting, nitrogenous fertilizer use, phosphoric fertilizer use, potash fertilizer use, sulfuric fertilizer use, twig plantation and pesticide use were : 46.43, 23.82, 89.30, 40.09,15.25,16.77, 16.15 and 24.04 percent, respectively. Vast majority (95 percent) of the farmers adopted MV programme of T. Aman rice but they have not adopted the recommended practices in full. Adoption level of eight selected practices revealed that the highest level of adoption was found in nitrogenous fertilizer (high level) followed by modern variety (medium). Remaining six practices were earmarked as low to very low level of adoption.

Objectives:

(i) assess the adoption level of improved package of practices for T. Aman rice cultivation and (ii) suggest some policy guidelines for extensive adoption of MV and other improved practices for T.Aman rice cultivation.

Methodology:

Gouripur upazila under Mymensingh district was selected purposively as the locale of the study. All the farm family heads (except landless) of 40 blocks under 10 unions of Gouripur upazila constituted the population of the study. Data were collected from a sample following three stage-sampling techniques. At the first stage of sampling, 40 percent of unions from the total unions i.e. out 10, 4 unions were selected using random numbers. At the second stage, two blocks from each of the four union totaling eight blocks were selected randomly from the previously selected four unions. Selected blocks were Hatshira and Shatuti from Gouripur sadar union, Bokainagar and Ramjibanpur from Bokainagar union, Tatkura and Kaltapara from Dauhakhola union and Baruamari and Bhangnamari from Bhangnamari union. At the third stage, the number of rice growers in each block was selected. Number of farmers determined. A total of 200 farm families were selected from 8 blocks raddomly taking 25 , farmers from each block. Data were collected through personal interview using interview schedule during January to May 2000. Eight recommended practices for improved T. Aman rice cultivation were selected to measure the level of adoption. These practices were : use of modern varieties (MV) of T. Aman rice, line transplanting, nitrogenous fertilizer use, phosphoric fertilizer use, potash fertilizer use, sulfuric fertilizer use, pesticide use and twig plantation.

It appears from the findings that 95 percent of the farmers adopted MV programme of T. Aman rice but they have not adopted the recommended practices in full. Adoption level of eight selected practices revealed that the highest level of adoption was found in nitrogenous fertilizer (high level) followed by modern variety (medium). Remaining six practices were earmarked as low to very low level of adoption. Based on the above findings following recommendations were put forward for wider adoption of the MV of T. Aman rice production technology.
