Studies on the Effects of Supple'mental Feed on the Growth of Nile Tilapia in Floating Ponds

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effects of supplementary diets on the growth of Nile tilapia, Saro- theredon nilotica (L.) in length and weight were carried our for a period of three months in 12 floating ponds in Bangladesh Agricultural University, ,Mymensingh. The four supplemental feeds using combiation of rice bran; wheat bran, mustard oil cake and fish meal in different proportion were tested. Fishes were stocked at the rate of 15/m3 in all the floating ponds, Fishes were found to survive and grow well in floating ponds having no mortality, The observed variations in gain in length exhibited by different supplemental feeds were not statistically significant, but the body weight gains were found to be significant. Supplemental feed Rice bran 30%, wheat bran 30% Fish meal 40% signifiantly (P 0.05) supirior to rice bran 25% + wheat bran 25% + mustard oil cakes 25% + fishmeal 25% and Rice bran 30%+wheat bran 30%+ fishmeal 25%. Though the firstone gave the best growth, but was not statistically significant over the feed with Rice bran 40'% mustard cake 50% and fish meal 25%.

The present investigation was undertaken to study the growth of Nile tilapia in floating ponds in relation to the efficiency of different types of supplemental feed given, as it has been found that the selection of appropriate type of supplemental feed is one of the major problems for floating pond culture

Methodology:

Field study was undertaken in a pond in Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh for a period of 3 (three) months from 20 April until 20 July 1979. ln this research programme 12 floating ponds were constructed. Each floating pond was made of a trough shaped enclosure of synthetic netting of mesh size 5.0 mm fitted to the inner side of a bamboo frame and the whole structure kept afloat by means of bamboo rafts made with five pieces of bamboo. of girth ranging from 20 crn to 30 cm. fitted to four sides. The bamboo pieces were fixed with galvanised iron nails and metallic wire. The dimension of the floating ponds used were 1.0 m x 1 .Om x 2.0 m depth. The desired water level (1.0 rn) of the pond was maintained by adjusting the position of ' fixing rafts to the floating structure, and .the remaining .portion of 1.0 m was above water. The net gain in length and weight studied over the period of three months were analyzed statistically. The experiment was set in Randomized Block Design. The Duncan's New Multiple Range Test was done to test the degree of significance

Achievement/Findings:

While considering the growth in relation to various supplemental diets it is suggested that in future, growth of fishes should be studied by varying the amount of animal protein or partially supplementing the animals protein with protein of plant origin or keeping the protein of animal origin more or less but varying the source, provided that amount of other constituents remain more or less constant. It is further suggested that trog, a cheap source of animal protein, if available, can be used in the feed trial of fishes in floating ponds supplementing fish meal.
