Yield and Water Use of Mustard Under Different Irrigation Regimes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out during the winter season of 1988-89 at the research farm ot Bangludeah Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) to study the influence of irrigation on the yield and water use of mustard mutant (BINA-3). Irrigation treatments showed positive effect on the increase of yield of the mutant. The highest yield of 1.15 t/ha (17% higher over control) was obtained with one irrigation at the pre-flowering stage. Crop water use efficiency decreased with the increase of irrigation frequency. The results thus revealed that one irrigation at the pre- flowering stage (35-40 days after sowing) was sufficient tor obtaining the optimum yield of the mustard mutant.

Objectives:

To evaluate the influence of irrigation on yield and water use of mustard mutant ( BINA-3 ).

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the research farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during the winter season of 1989-90. The moisture contents at 1/3 bar and 15 bar were 21 to 28% and 4 to 18% (by weight), respectively, The soil moisture variation in control monitored during the growing period is shown. The experiment was laidout in a randomized block design with five irrigation treatments having three replications. Seeds of mustard mutant (BINA-3) were sown during mid-Novernber. 1989, at the rate of 7.5 kg/ha in rows 20cm apart. The individual plot size was 5m x 3m. At the time of final land preparation, basal dose of fertilizer was applied at the rate of 80 kg N/ha as urea, 80 kg P₂O₅/ha as M. P., 4 kg Zn/ha as zinc oxide and 20 kg S/ha as gypsum. Another 80 kg N/ha as urea was applied in two equal splits, one at active vegetative stage and the other at the flowering stage. Five irrigation treatments were used in the experiment. The crop was harvested during the 1st week of March 1990.
