Genetic Analysis of Yield and Yield Contributing Characters in Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Combining ability analysis suggested that both additive and non additive gene actions were important in controlling the grain yield and its contributing characteristic . For days to heading, length of spike, 100•kernel weight and grain yield per ptan tqenetic systems were largely additive in nature. Regarding the most of the characters Sonalika and Mexipak-65 were the best genotypes while 'Inia 66' x 'Tanorl 71' "Tanori 71' x 'Nor tano 67'. 'Inia 66 X' X 'Norteno 67' wero the best specific combiner for Mexipak 65' and 'Mexipak days to heading. number of tillers / plant. spike length and grain yield / plant respectively. Th e path coefficient analysis showed that number of tillers per plant and spike length were the most important yield contributing characters influencing the grain yield/plant.

Objectives:

The present study has been aimed at increasing the genetic diversity with. in the available germ plasms maintained at Bangladesh Agricultural University and to obtain information on the genetic sys tern and the relationship between yield and yield contributing characters in F2 populations of a set of diallel cross.

Methodology:

Five cuItivars nameIy SonaIika, in ia 66. Mexipak 65. Tanori 71 and Nor- teno 67 were used in this investigation and were crossed by hand in all cossi- .: ble combinations excluding the reciprocals, The F seeds were grown in the Bangladesh Agricultural University Fa- I . rm to get the t 2 seeds.' The experiment .was conducted in the sa.n s place during the winter of 1979 80 including five parents and ten F2 populations. Fifteen genetic materials were grown in mid November 1979 in a completely randomized block design with three replications. The parental populations were grown in two rows and the F2 populations were in ten rows of 3m. each. The rows were 30 cm apart and the plants were spaced 15 cm. At random 10 plants from parental population and 50 plants from F2 population were taken from each replication for recording data on days to hoarding, plant height. number of tillers/plant. spike length. number of kernels/spike, 100-kernel weight and grain yield/plant. The data were analyzed for general combining ability by following rnodel-'1 methods '2' of Griffin and path analysis was done according to Li .
