Critical Period of Crop Weed Competitlon in Direct Seeded Aus Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was undertaken at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to find out the critical period of weed competition in direct seeded aus rice. The treatments were no weed competition to weed competition at different stages of growth period. The principaI weed in the field was Cyperus rotundas, which constituted 68.22% of the weed vegetation. Among the other weeds Echino-chloe crusgalli, Eleusine indica, and Cynodon dactylon were of considerabIe density. The critical period of weed competition ranged with the increase of weed competition duration. One weeding was not sufficient to controI the weeds effectively. If, however, one weeding to be done, it is suggested that it is better to do between 30 to 40 davs of sowing.

Objectives:

1. To determine the critical period of weed competition in aus rice.

Methodology:

The land was medium high in elevation and medium in fertility level and it belonged to the Brahmaputra alluvial soil tract. The soil was sandy loam with a pH value 6.5-6.8. There were sixteen treatments which were set in a randomized block design with three replications. The net area of a unit plot was 10m². The treatments were the different periods of weed competition. The cultivar used was BR3 (Biplob) and the seeds were sown in lines 25 cm apart on a well prepared field on 10 th April, 1983. After germination, when the seedlings were about 10-12 cm in height, they were thinned by maintaining a space of 10-1 2 cm between the seedlings. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 60 kg N, 40 kg P₂O₅ and 20 kg K₂0 per hectare. Half of N and the whole of P₂0₅ and K₂0 were applied at final land preparation and the rest half of N was top dressed in two splits at 30 and 60 days after seedling. The different species of weeds found, growing in the experimental plots, were identified and the intensity of infestation of each species of weed was determined. The effect of time of weed removal on weed population and dry matter accumulation was studied. The observation on yield components, the grain yield and the straw yield were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

The results indicated that critical period of weed competition in direct seeded aus rice extends up to 40 days after sowing during which period about 26% of the total reduction in yield occurs.
