Effect of Nitrogen and Sulphur Fertilization on Yield Response and Nitrogen and Sulphur Composition of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiment on BR1 boro rice with four levels of nitrogen (0. 40. 80 and 120 kg N/ha from urea) and three levels of sulphur (0. 25 and 50 S/ha from gypsum) showed that nitrogen and sulphur application significantly increased the grain yield. Straw yield increased significantly only with nitrogen application but not with sulphur application. Synergistic relationship of N and S content in both grain and strew was observed due to sulphur fertilization.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of nitrogen and sulphur application on the yield response and composition of BR1 boro rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at BAU Farm, Mymensingh during the boro season of 1984. The soil of the experimental plot was silt loam having pH value of 6.3 and 1.10% organic matter. The initial nutrient status of soil in respect of available p, K and S was 21.5, 77.0 and 8.5 ppm, respectively. Randomized block design was followed in the experiment with three replications having unit plot size of 4m x 3m with 1m spacing in between the blocks and the plots. Twelve treatments were obtained by the application of four levels of nitrogen (0,40, 80 and 120 kg N/ha from urea) and three levels of sulphur (0,25 and 50 kg S/ha from gypsum). Phosphorus and potassium were applied as basal dose at the rate of 25 kg and 20 kg K/ha from triple super- phosphate and muriate of potash, respectively. Three 30 days old seedling of Chandna (BR 1 ) were transplanted per hill on January 17.1984 with a spacing of 20 cm x 15 cm. Weeding, irrigation and spraying of insecticide and other intercultural operations were done as and when felt necessary. The crop was harvested on June 14,1984 at full maturity. Grain and straw were dried in the sun and the samples from sun dried materials were dried in oven at 65⁰C overnight to obtain results on oven dry basis. N con- tent in straw and grain was determined. Analysis of variance on yield and N and S content of the crop was made and the significant mean differences were adjusted by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test.
