Simple, Partial and Multiple Correlations Between Different Characters of Brassica Species

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In 1978-79 an experiment was conducted with 26 varieties/ strains of three different Brassica species. The correlations were studied on the whole population considering 9 important characters. Out of 36, 3 values were positively significant at 5% level and 4 values were significant at 1% level of which two were negative. Days to first flowering was positively significant with days to maturity and negatively with yield/ ha. Days to maturity was also negatively correlated with yield/ ha. Plant height was positively correlated with stalk height, number of secondary branches and yield/ ha. Number of primary branches was positively and significantly related with yield/ plant. Partial correlations showed that 28 values were significant out of 90 values. Multiple correlations were also studied. Strong positive combined relationship was obtained between plant height and stalk height, number of primary and secondary branches. The yield was dependent mostly on primary and secondary branches, while plant height contributed considerably among the plant characters used for this estimation.

Objectives:

To estimate the correlation coefficients (simple, partial and multiple) of yield and some yield contributing characters in 26 varieties/ strains of Brassica populations collected from both exotic and local sources and being maintained at Brassica Breeding project of Bangladesh Agricultural University.

Methodology:

The seeds of 9, 6 and 11 varieties/ strains of B. campestris, B. napus and B. juncea respectively were sown on 5th November, 1973 in a randomized block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 2 x 4 m sq. Standard cultivation practices were followed in raising this crop. The data were taken on the average of ten plants from each replication. The average values were used for estimation of simple, partial and multiple correlation coefficients.
