Some Aspects of Nitrogen Fixing Blue Green Algae - a Review

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Blue-green aIgae are important since they are potentiaI in fixing atmospheric nitrogen into their body proteins for subsequent use by the rice plants after their decomposition in soils. Eighty references describing the factors affecting growth and N₂-fixation by blue-green algae and their use for increasing rice yields have been reviewed. It is seen that blue-green algae are photoautotrophs but sensitive to very high light intensity and prefer low light intensity: they are viable upto drying and desiccation but grows best in moist soils and waters: preferable pH ranges between 7.5 and 10.0; able to fix about 70 kg N/ha on average in a year and may increase rice yields by at least 10-20%. Overall, N₂-fixation and rice yield increase may be usually higher.
