Salinity Tolerance Studies on Some Wheat Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during November 2001 to March 2002 to observe the relative salinity tolerance of three wheat genotypes (GPB-148, Akbar and Aghrani) under different salinity levels (control, 0.6 and 1.2% NaCl). The genotypes and the imposed salinity treatments showed significant variations in respect of yield as well as the other characters. The variety Akbar showed significantly highest scores over the saline stresses for most of the yield and yield attributes like total tillers, leaf area index, number of spike, spike length, 1000-grain weight, harvest index and finally straw and grain yields.These characters gradually decreased with the gradual increase in stress level with the non stress control treatment being the highest score of all. Interaction effect between the variety and salinity levels appeared significant for most of the studied characters. However, over all, Akbar showed higher salinity tolerance of the three genotype used.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to observe the effect of different salinity levels on growth and yield of wheat genotypes and to identify relative salt tolerant ability of the genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during November 2001 to March 2002 to observe the relative salinity tolerance of three wheat genotypes (GPB-148, Akbar and Aghrani) under different salinity levels (control, 0.6 and 1.2% NaCl). Each pot contained 6 kg of soils collected from BINA farm. Urea, TSP, MP and gypsum were applied at the rate of 220, 180, 120 and 50 kg ha^-1 respectively. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Salinity treatments were imposed at 17 days after sowing. Data on morpho-physiological attributes and yield were recorded. Analysis of variance was done following randomized complete block design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Russell, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
