Effect of Storage Condition on the Quality of Wheat Seed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Wheat seeds of Sonalika variety were stored in five types of containers for nine months in two different storage conditions. The germination percentage of the seeds stored in air-conditioned room ranged from 88.47 to 92.32⁰ F irrespective of containers used. Seed stored in tin shed area gave poor percentage of germination except the seeds of two containers viz. polyethylene bag (91.33 per cent) and tin container (88.77 percent). Comparatively lower number of fungal populations were recorded in the seeds of polythene bag and tin container under both storage conditions. It was observed that earthen containers with or without tar coating are not suitable for storing wheat seeds. Wheat seeds may be stored in double layered polyethylene bags and tin containers under farmers condition.

Objectives:

To determine suitable containers which could be used in quality control of wheat seeds in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Two types of storage conditions vlz: Air conditioned area & tin shed area and five types of containers viz , Motka (tar coated), Motka (without tar coated),Tin container, double layered polythene bag and Jute bag were used. The coatings with tar were applied in both the sides of Motka. Motkas (with or without tar coating) were closed with double layered polyethylene sheets. Freshly harvested seeds of wheat variety double layered polyethylene sheets. Freshly harvested seeds of wheat variety "Sonalika" were collected from the Regional Agricultural Research Station.BARI, Jamalpur in the 1st week of Match. 1979. They were sun dried for 3 days and 5 kg of seeds were kept on the 4 th day in each container on 7 th of March.1979 and were stored for 9 months. Temperature and relative humidity were recorded in each month. Before storing the seeds the containers were sun-dried and storage areas & containers were thoroughly cleaned. Containers were replicated thrice for each storage environment. The experiment was laid out in Pure Repeated Measure and the mean values were compared on the basis of Duncan's New Multiple Range Test procedure. Data on different characters of seedlings were recorded on the 10 th day of seeding.

Achievement/Findings:

The analyses of variance showed the significant differences of characters studied. Seed moisture contents fluctuated during the months of storage. In both the storage conditions moisture contents of seeds reduced significantly when stored in tin containers and polythene bags. Mean moisture percent was higher in tin shed area than the air conditioned area The prevalence of pathogens in polyethylene bags and tin containers . under both the storing conditions were near about the same. Satisfactory germination percentage in seeds of polythene bags and tin containers were probably due to less relative humidity & also due to less number of fungal populations within these containers. The present study suggests that under farmers conditions wheat seeds could be stored satisfactorily in double layered polythene bags and tin containers.
