An Investigation on the Availability of Male Sterile Onion in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An exploratory trip was undertaken in the onion seed producing areas of Rajshahi during the 1983-84 growing season to identify and collect male-sterlie onions. Suspected male-sterile plants, identified through poor to nil pollen availability on the umbel at full bloom stage were collected. Pollen fro.n such plants were microscopically tested for confirmation of sterility. Out of the plants collected from a population covering more than two hectares of land. one plant was found completely sterile where as the ether two were intermediate in terms of pollen viability and availability. The immature anthers of male-sterile plant were translucent-green in contrast to the more yellowish in normal ones. perianth segments of rnale-sterite flowers were less open than that of cytoplasmic and chromosomal recessive factors as in Italian Red 13-33 and can be maintained, a hybrid breeding program can be taken to improve the poor bulb yield of onion in Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To find out male sterile plants among the onion populations in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

In Bangladesh, there are two local varieties of bulb onions-one is known as "Bhatti" which is grown for bulb throughout the country but the seed production is limited mostly in Bhati (low land) area of Faridpur. The colour of the bulb is dark chocolate. elonqatsd in shape, with good keeping quality. In most cases, a single onion is found to contain two or more bulbs. The other variety is familiar as "Taherpuri" the bulb and seed productions of which are mostly limited to some areas of Rajshahi. This variety has normally light chocolate colour, mostly single bulhed flat bottomed onions with high keeping quality. Since male -sterile plant with short- day growing habit and good keeping quality was not available in Bangladesh, a collection expedition was made in the seed fields of "Taherpuri" onions during full' bloom stage in 1984 to identify male-sterile plants. The determination of sterility was done by close examination of inflorescence of onion for pollen production in about two hectares of seed field. The investigation continued three consecutive days staring from about 9-30 a.m. till 3.00 p.m. each day during full bloom by touching the inflorescence and looking for pollen adhering to the fingers. Hands were cleaned thoroughly before touching individual umbals , When pollen adhered to the fingers. the umbels were observed very closely for other morphological characteristics of the individual flowers. If male-sterility is present in a given plant, all anthers of that plant are affected and become shriveled and dried. No other gross phenotypic expression is clear.
