Effects of Rhizobium Inoculum, Nitrogen and Phosphorus on Yield Contributing Characters of Soybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of Rhizobium inoculum, nitrogen and phosphorus on the morphological features and yield contributing parameters of soybean has been studied. It has been observed that as an effect of inoculum with nitrogen the plants attained the longest height with maximum number of leaves. When inoculum applied without additional nitrogen and phosphorus the plants exhibited pronounced yield contributing features such as maximum pods/plant, seeds/pod, 100 seed weight, economic yield and harvest index. Biomass production or biological yield has been found to be the highest with the application of inoculum and phosphorus. All the responses had been found to be statistically significant over the control.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of Rhizobium inoculum, nitrogen and phosphorus on the yield contributing features and different kinds of yield in soybean.

Methodology:

Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with seven treatments and three replications was used. The treatment combinations were as follows: Control: Inoculum (I); Nitrogen (N); Phosphorus (P); I+N; I+ P and N + P. Seeds were inoculated with Rhizobium strain @ 25 g/kg of seed. Nitrogen was applied in the form of urea @100 kg N /ha of which 25 kg at the time of sowing and the rest 75 kg after 5 weeks of sowing and phosphorus was given in the form of T.S.P. @ 25 kg P/ha at the time of sowing. The 1 m x 1.25m plots were thoroughly prepared by spade digging. The seeds were sown in 5 lines in each plot at a depth of 3.8 cm with 25 cm row to row distance using the seed rate 90 kg/ha. No irrigation was applied. After final harvest ten randomly selected plants from each unit plot were recorded for average number at nodules, plant height, leaves and pods per plant. seeds per pod, 100 seed weight, economic yield (YE), biological yield (BY) and harvest index (HI).
