Studies of Some Lentil Under Water Stress Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during November 2000 to February 2001 to study the effect of water stress on some lentil genotypes. Two factors- % field capacity (60% FC, 50% FC, 40% FC and 30% FC) and variety/ mutants (BARI masur-4, E₅M-1018, N₅M-573 and N₅M-214) were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. The experiment results indicated that the highest plant height, higher number of branches per plant, maximum number of pods per plant, maximum number of seeds per plant, 100-seed weight and total dry matter per plant were found in the 60% FC. The most satisfactory seed yield per plant was obtained from the 60% FC than that of 50% FC > 40 % FC> 30% FC. Mutant line N₅M-573 showed better performance than other variety/mutants. Interaction between 60% FC and N₅M-573, gave the highest seed yield of lentil. The experiment should be repeated at different locations with varying soil and climatic condition of the country for final recommendation.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of water stress of lentil genotypes, to find out suitable moisture level for optimum growth and yield and to identify lentil genotype tolerant to water stress.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with four lentil genotypes at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during November 2000 to February 2001. Two factors- % field capacity (60% FC, 50% FC, 40% FC and 30% FC) and variety/ mutants (BARI masur-4, E₅M-1018, N₅M-573 and N₅M-214) were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. Each pot contained 4 kg of soils collected from BINA farm. Fertilizers 0.260 g Urea, 0.800 g TSP and 0.260 g MP were incorporated with the soil in each pot thoroughly to apply 30 kg N, 90 kg P₂O₅ and 40 kg k₂O per hectare. Seeds of lentil genotypes were sown on 21 November of 2000. Five to seven seeds were sown per pot at 10 cm spacing. The soil of the pots were kept well moist by applying water up to 50% of field capacity to ensure proper germination at which only three healthy seedlings per pot were retained for the experiment. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Field capacity of the soil was measured following gravimetric method. The amount of water measured for field capacity was multiplied by 0.60, 0.50, 0.40 and 0.30 to determine the amount of water to maintain 60, 50, 40 and 30% FC, respectively. These stress treatments were applied at 40 days after sowing and continued up to maturity. At maturity, data on plant height, number of primary and secondary branches per plant, number of filled and unfilled pods per plant, grains per plant, 100-grain weight, grain yield, total dry matter and harvest index (HI) were recorded. Data were analyzed using statistical program MSTAT-C. The mean differences were compared with Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).
