Shallow Tube-well Irrigatlon in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In the study the type of screen and its length now in use for Shallow Tube-Wells (STW) in the country by different agencies have been reviewed. A critical study was made on the screen and a relationship has been shown graphically between entrance velocity, discharge and the length. The study also Indicates that the general practice of 12.19 m screen length and similar type of screen slot opening for STW now in use should not be the criteria everywhere, rather it should be fixed on the availability of aquifers at different depths and their hydraulic properties.

Objectives:

To see whether the present criteria hold good for the ground water zones of the country.

Methodology:

Specification of STW Screen in Use The screen in use for STW in Bangladesh consists of three components (a) Outer cover of G. I Pipe with 1.27 cm dia. holes approximately 1600 slots in 3.05 m screen length. Open area ratio is about 20%. (b) Intermediate Brass Wire Net 38 SWG having standard mesh of 55.65%. The wire net must have an open area ratio of minimum 30%. (c) Inner Perforated Brass Sheet of 32 SWG having 0.32 cm dia, perforations with open area ratio of 45.55%. The discharge likely to pass through the three stages of screen.

Finally, it is very important to see that as the size of the screen slot openings and length is pre-fixed, therefore before installation of any STW it must be thoroughly checked whether it was supplied as per specifications because variation of either of the components will have a direct effect on the expected yield of the wen.
