A Study on Rainfall Pattern of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The data on rainfall for a period of 16 years (1965-80) from 10 different but evenly distributed locations in Bangladesh were collected and analyzed. Of the average annual rainfall of 2047 mm, the contribution of the months of June, July, August and September were 416,415,342 and 269 mm, respectively, with the corresponding percent coefficients of variation being 55.5,50.4.48.3 and 51.7. The percent coefficient of variation for the rest of the months ranged from 68.8 to 232.8. A rainfall of less than 50 mm was received during more than 42% of the rainy months. Average rainfall per rainy days was 18.3 mm and the average number of rainy days per year was 115.5 (116). The number of rainy days were 18, 23, 21 and 16 during June, July, August and September, respectively.

To classify the rainfall period into normal, abnormal and drought months and its distribution and to study the types of distribution of rainfall.

Methodology:

The most commonly used Weibull formulae was used for probability analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

It appears that rainfall of June should be brought into consideration to store the excess water for agricultural use in drought months.
