Variability and Character Association in Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Variabilities and genetic parameters of tomato genotype were studied, The analysis of variance of 19 genotypes for different characters showed a high dogree of variation. In all cases phenotypic coefficient of variations were higher than genotypic coefficient of variations. High degree of heritability with high genotypic and pheriotvcic coefficient of variation and genetic advance in percentage of mean were obtained for number of fruits per plant. individual fruit weight and plant height. Yield per plant showed low heritability and high genetic advance as percentage of mean. lndividual fruit weight has significant positive correlations with plant height, dry matter 'content (and yield per plant. Plant height with dry matter content, number of fruits per plant with ascorbic acid content had significant positive correlation. Significant negative correlations were found between number 01 fruits per plant and individual fruit weight

Objectives:

To study the variability and character association.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November 1983 to April, 1984 with 19 different varieties from home and abroad . The land selected for the experiment was medium high, sandy loam with pH value 6.5. The total rainfall of the locality was 80. 5mm during the growing period and the average maximum and minimum temperatures were 28.5°C and 16 .4°C and the average relative humidity was 71.84% The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Block Design with three replications. The plot size was 5m <60 cm with row to row distance 60 crn and plant to plant distance 50 cm. Trans planting, mulching, weeding, pruning, watering etc were practiced in time. For collection of data, 10 plants from each unit plot were selected randomly.
