The Antifeedant and Growth Disrupting Effects of Two Indigenous Plant Extracts on Epilachna Dodecastigma Muls

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In the laboratory tests. as Iittla as 0.01 % concentration of the metha- noltc extracts of seeds of chinaberry, Melia azedarach Linn. and Pithraj. Amoora ruhituka Wright and Arn. possessed activity of feeding dererrents against the larvae of Eoitechns dodecastigma Muls. The extracts were highly effective at all concentrations ranging between 0.01 and 0.5% Larvae fed on treated leaves had significantly longer developmental periods than the control. Highest concentration (5%) of the extract of chinabarrv and Pithraj produced 75 % and 45% mortality respectively in the first instar larvae. Fecundity and viability of eggs reduced significantly when the extract treated food leaves were supplied both to the larvae and adults. Only 13% of the eggs were laid at 0.5% concentration of the chinaberry seed kernel extract (CSKE).

Objectives:

To examine the antifeedant effects of seed kernel extracts of chinaberry (Melia azedsrech Linn.) and pit- raj (Amoora ruhituka Wright and Arn.) against E. dodecastigma.

Methodology:

Fifty gm seeds of chinaberry and pithraj were ground separately in an electric grinding machine. The ground materials of each category were stirred at room temperature with a magnetic stirrer with 1 litre methanol for 3 hours. The mixture was allowed to stand for 20 hours and again stirred for an hour and filtered. The methanol was evaporated and the residues were dried to a constant weight in an oven at 40⁰C. A hard brownish waxes of chinaberry seed kernel extracts (CSKE) and pithraj seed kernel extracts (PSKE) were obtained. The extracts were dissolved in 85% methanol and diluted for preparing 0.01. 0.1.0.25 and 05% concentrations. Larvae of Epilachna dodecastigma used for different tests were obtained from the laboratory stock culture. They were reared on the leaves of ribbed gourd, a Lulfacutanqula (L) Roxb. in petridishes. 20-25 days old seedlings of ribbed gourd grown in plastic pots were sprayed (with an atomizer) uniformly at the tour concentrations of the extract. One pair grubs of each instar were released per sprayed plant and allowed to feed on and replicated five times. Feedlnq responses of the larvae were observed.
