Variability Studies for Grain Yield and Other Morpho-physiological Characters in Different F2 Populations of Bread Wheat Crosses

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Estimates of variability and genetic parameters for grain yield and six morpho-physiological characters have been computed In F₂ population of five bread wheat crosses. In general, flag leaf area, biological yield and number of grains showed comparatively high phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation. High heritability was observed for days. to heading and plant height in four crosses, for number of grains in one cross and for 100-grain weight and grain yield in three crosses. Genetic advance was high for plant height and biological yield in one cross, for flag leaf area, 100-grain weight and grain yield in three crosses and for number of grains in all crosses. High heritability along with high genetic advance was recorded for plant height, 100-grain weight and grain yield in two crosses and for number of grains in one cross.

Objectives:

To study genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance on yield and other yield related morpho- physiological characters in F₂ segregating populations of five bread wheat crosses which may enable the breeder to formulate effective selection procedure in bread wheat.

Methodology:

Five F₂populations along with their six parental lines of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were grown in a randomized block design (RBD) with three replications at the Field Laboratory of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from November 1992 to April 1993. Seeds were sown keeping line to line and plant to plant distances of 20 cm and 10 cm, respectively. Irrigation, fertilization, weeding and other intercultural operations were done whenever necessary for the full potential expression of important plant characters in F₂ plants. One hundred and fifty plants from F₂ populations of each cross (50 plants from each replication) and 30 plants from each parent (10 plants from each replication) were selected at random and data were recorded on days to heading, flag leaf area (flag leaf lamina length x flag leaf lamina width x 0.79 Simpson), plant height, biological yield, number of grains, 100-grain weight and grain yield. Genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation were calculated.

Conclusively, this study reveals that biological yield, flag leaf and grain numbers had comparatively higher phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation. Moreover, high heritability and genetic advances as observed suggests that the early generation selection would be effective for plant height in the crosses Kanchan x YC-05 Kanchan x HT-05, for number of grains only in cross Kanchan x YC-118, for 100-grain weight in the crosses Kanchan x SA-92 and Kanchan x YC-16 and for grain yield in the crosses Kanchan x SA-II8 and Kanchan x YC-05.
