A Study on the Distribution of Lumbar Spinal Nerves in Black Bengal Goat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Ten formalin preserved Black Bengal goats were used in this study to trace the course and distribution of lumbar spinal nerves. The dorsal branches of lumbar spinal nerve supplied the skin, the cutaneous muscle and the muscles of back, loin and croup. The ventral branches of lumbar nerves supplied the skin, the abdominal muscles, the cranial and caudal part of mammary gland and the muscles of the lateral and medial aspect of hip, thigh and leg. The ventral branches of last four lumbar and all sacral nerves formed the lumbar and sacral plexuses. The ventral branch of third lumbar of Black Bengal goat was similar with the genitofemoral nerves of other domestic animals e. g. horse, ox, and sheep. The innovation of the mammary gland by the ventral branches of second, third and fourth lumbar nerves deserve special notice. The innovation of lumber spinal nerves were discussed in the light of the findings in other domestic animals

Objectives:

To report the origin and distribution of lumbar spinal nerves in the present study.

Methodology:

Ten Black Bengal goats were used in the study. All the animals were bled and preserved by iinjecting 10% formalin. The dissections were carried out to trace the course and distribution of the lumbar spinal nerves.

Achievement/Findings:

The ventral branches of sixth lumbar, first and second sacral nerves are united by anastomotic branches. Anastomotic of the branches of fourth, fifth and sixth lumbar nerves are present. The sixth lumbar ventral branch emerged through greater sciatic foramen, run downward Caudally over the sacrosciatic ligament and M. gamellus. Above the trochanter major of femur it gave off four muscular branches which supplied M'. gamellus and biceps femoris. Large muscular branches and peroneal nerve were given off in between tuber ischii and trochanter major. The large muscular branch supplied the M. semimembranosus, biceps femoris. semitendinosus. adductor gracilia. At the middle of the thigh posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh arose. The sixth lumber nerve (sciatic) entered between two heads of M. gastrocnemius continued as tibial nerve. Here the sciatic (sixth lumbar nerve) gave off rnuscular branches to M. gastrocnemius. superficial and deep digital flexor, flexor hallucis longus, popliteus, tibialis anterior. The sciatic extends up to the digit.
