Effects of Split Application of Urea Fertilizer on Growth, Yield and Yield Contributing Characters of Rice Cultivars

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out in pots at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during 27 December, 2002 to 2 June, 2003 to find out the effect of four nitrogen (Urea) levels viz. full dose (1.5 g/pot) of urea at single split (15 DAT), full dose of urea at two equal split (½ at 15 DAT + ½ 50 DAT) and full dose of urea at three equal splits (½ at 15 DAT +1/3 at 30 DAT + 1/3 at 50 DAT) on rice varieties namely, Binadhan-4, BRRI dhan 29 and Iratom-24. Plant height, number of tillers hill^-1, leaves hill^-1, leaf area hill^-1, dry matter of leaves, stem and roots hill^-1, chlorophyll content in leaves, TDM hill^-1,panicle hill^-1,filled grains panicle^-1, grain yield hill^-1, biological yield hill^-1, and harvest index (HI) were increased over single splits. The values of above parameters were the highest when the plants were treated with three equal splits of urea. Among the splits applications, three equal splits of urea were more effective than the other split applied. Among the varieties, BRRI dhan 29 showed the best performance under the above split and Binadhan-4 showed the lowest performance under single split.

Objectives:

The objective of the study was to find out proper split application of urea fertilizer for optimum growth and yield of boro rice.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out in pots at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during the period from 27 December, 2002 to 2 June, 2003 to find out the effect of four nitrogen (Urea) levels viz. full dose (1.5 g/pot) of urea at single split (15 DAT), full dose of urea at two equal split (½ at 15 DAT + ½ 50 DAT) and full dose of urea at three equal splits (½ at 15 DAT +1/3 at 30 DAT + 1/3 at 50 DAT) on growth, yield and yield contributing characters of rice cultivars namely, Binadhan-4, BRRI dhan 29 and Iratom-24. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design. Each pot contained 7 kg of soils collected from BINA farm. Fertilizers were applied in the experimental pots at the rate of 180, 100, 20 and 4 kg ha^-1 in the form of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively. Three 40 day-old seedlings were transplanted in each pot on 4 February 2003. Analysis of variance was done according to the design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Freed, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
