Heterosis in Some Quantitative Characters in Fl Hybrid Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The local variety of rice Nizershail possessing tall culm, drooping leaves was crossed with six foreign strains introduced from IRRI, Philippines, and ientified as stout statured stiffstrawed, more or less having similar yielding bility as Nizershail to obtain base materials for a breeding programme. The parental lines and the FI hybrids were grown under similar environmental conditions to study heterosis for some quantitative characters related to yield. In general all FI hybrids from different crosses showed considerable positive heterosis for plant height and panicle length. With regard to tillering habit, flag leaf length, number of spikelets per panicle and pe r cent fertile florets, varying degrees of positive and negative heterosis were observed in different crosses. Most crosses showed considerable negative heterosis for flag leaf angle.

Objectives:

To study heterosis in the F1 plants with regard to some quantitative characters related to yield.

Methodology:

The local favorite variety known as Nizershail which is highly photoperiod sensitive, adapted to Aman season only, and identified as good yielding but having rather an inferior plant type, such as long and drooping leaves, tall culrns susceptable to lodging, was used for crossing with the foreign strains. The foreign strains Were originally developed at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) 1.The line lR 277-4-221 originated from the cross B 581 A5545/2X IDaiS ; 2. Achievement/Findings:
