Effect of Fungicides, Soil Amendment, Plant Extract and Sanitation on Late Blight of Winter Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effectiveness of seven different selected treatments such as mustard oil cake, ridomil gold, bavistin, sanitation, plant extract (Dholkalmi) and control were evaluated controlling late blight of tomato in the experimental field of Plant Pathology Division, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during the winter season of 2006-2007. Considerably the least disease incidence and severity of late blight and highest yield were obtained in ridomil gold applied plot and increased fruit yield (47.3%) over control. Bavistin ranked second in position in relation to fruit yield. The highest plant height and number of branches/plant were observed in mustard oil cake treated plants followed by ridomil gold while the least was obtained in control treatment.

Objectives:

To develop a management schedule for tomato to resist or escape late blight infection by using mustard oil cake, ridomil gold, bavistin, sanitation, plant extract (Dholkalmi).

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted to develop a suitable strategy against late blight of tomato. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications under natural field conditions at BINA farm, Mymensingh. The unit plot size was 2 m × 1.5 m. Fertilizers were applied 161 kg N, 120 kg P₂O₅and 120 kg K₂O ha^-1. Mustard oil cake was mixed thoroughly with the soil @ 200 kg ha^-1. Mustard oil cake was allowed to decompose for 5 days after application. Thirty day old seedlings of Binatomato-5 were transplanted with spacing 50 cm between rows and plants. Fungicides ridomil gold and bavistin were applied @ 0.2% and 0.4%, respectively at the onset of disease; the subsequent two sprays were applied at an interval of 7 days. Plant extract of Dholkalmi (1:10 v/v) was spread thoroughly two times at the day of fungicidal spray. Data on incidence and severity of late blight were recorded at 40, 55, 70 and 85 days after transplanting based on symptoms. Data were recorded by the following parameters: a. Percent Infected Plant: Plant infection was calculated by the following formula, Percent Infected Plant (PIP) = Number of infected plants plot^-1/Total number of plants plot^-1 ×100. b. Disease severity: Disease severity of late blight was recorded by using 0-5 indexing scale (Anonymous, 1996). c. Number of branches plant^-1 was counted during harvesting stage. d. Plant height was measured by a centimeter scale during harvesting stage. e. Fruit weight plot^-1. Data were analyzed statistically using computer package MSTATC. Means were compared with DMRT (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

Use of ridomil was reduce the incidence and severity of late blight of tomato plants in the field. The farmers get disease free healthy seeds and increased yield of tomato. The average income of the farmers was increased. Thus the farmers as well as the country will be benefited.
