Effect of Salinity on Growth and Yield of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted in the net house of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during December, 2002 to March, 2003 to study the salt tolerance of three wheat varieties viz., Kanchan, Sourav and Shotabdi. The salinity levels viz., control (no salt was applied), 3, 6 and 9 dSm^-1, were imposed at 45 days after sowing (DAS). Plant height, number of tillers, leaf area index, leaf, stem, root and total dry matter per plant, number of effective tillers, number of spikes hill^-1, length of spike, number of spikelets spike^-1, 1000-grain weight, grain yield and harvest index were gradually decreased with gradual increase in salinity levels. The variety Shotabdi showed the best performance in almost all of the parameters and Sourav showed the least of that. The highest root dry weight was found in Kanchan. Shotabdi and Kanchan showed similar results in plant height, length of spike and number of grains spike^-1. However Shotabdi was medium and Sourov was susceptible to salinity stress.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to observe the effect of different salinity levels on growth and yield of wheat genotypes and to identify relative salt tolerant genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted with three wheat varieties viz., Kanchan, Sourav and Shotabdi in the net house of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during December, 2002 to March, 2003. The salinity levels viz., control (no salt was applied), 3, 6 and 9 dSm^-1, were imposed at 45 days after sowing (DAS). Each pot contained 8.5 kg of soils collected from the experimental field of Department of Crop Botany, BAU, Mymensingh. Urea, TSP, MP and gypsum were applied at the rate of 220, 180, 120 and 50 kg ha^-1 respectively. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Data on morpho-physiological attributes and yield were recorded. Analysis of variance was done following randomized complete block design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Russell, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
