Comparative Performance of Pummel Germplasm at Rars Ishurdi

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A comparative study between CG Ish-001and BARI Pummelo-3 done at the RARS, Ishurdi, Pabna during 2012 to 2014. Among the two germplasm the highest number of fruits per plant (80) was counted from CG Ish-001 whereas; BARI Pummelo-3 produced the lowest number of fruits per plant (50). Similarly average fruit weight and fruit size was higher in CG Ish-001 compare to BARI Pummelo-3. But thickness of rind was higher (2.20 cm) in BARI Pummelo-3 compare to CG Ish-001 (1.75 cm). Number of seeds per fruit is less in CG Ish-001 (123) compare to BARI Pummelo-3 (150). Edible portion was higher (57%) in compare to BARI Pummelo-3 (50%). Most of the qualitative characters of CG Ish-001 were similar to BARI Pummelo-3. Bur some more desirable qualitative character were found in CG Ish-001. Flesh colour was red in CG Ish-001, which was exceptional in pummelo. Taste was excellent and bitterness was completely absent. Moreover, it was late harvesting (October-December) whereas; BARI Pummelo-3 is mid season variety (September- October). So it might be an excellent variety for late season.

Objectives:

To study the performance of the promising pummelo germplasm
To compare the popular germplasm with release variety
To developed more pummelo varieties having higher yield, good quality and late season bearing potentiality

Methodology:

A promosing pummelo germplasm CG Ish-001 was evaluated at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna during 2013-2014 and compared with BARI Pummelo-3. The germplasm was identified at Parbatipur upazilla district of Dinajpur. the plant was fertilized with cowdung (20 kg), urea (500 g), TSP (500 g), MoP (500 g), gypsum (200 g) , zinc (4 g), boron (4 g) in two equal installments one at the onset and other at the end of the rainy season. Weeding, irrigation and other management practices were done as per requirement. Five mature fruits from each germplasm were randomly selected for the study. Fully mature fruits were harvested from the plant and data on number of fruits/plant, weight of fruit (g), number of segments/fruit, edible portion (%), TSS (%),fruit shape, fruit colour, flesh colour, flesh texture, juiciness, taste, bitterness and peeling quality were recorded after ripening of the fruits according to the IPGRI descriptors and the mean data were analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering yield, harvesting time and other qualitative characteristics, the germplasm of CG Ish-001 was found excellent. Regarding the fruit size, shape, attractive skin and flesh colour and excellent taste along with free from bitterness. It might be released as a variety for late season.
