Evaluation of Local Pummelo Germplasm at Jaintiapur, Sylhet

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eleven local pummelo germplasm were evaluated at the CRS, Jaintiapur, Sylhet, and found a significant variations in respect of plant growth, yield and fruit quality. The highest plant height and base girth was recorded in CG Jai-008. Fruits/plant was found maximum (40.25) from CG Jai-001 followed by CG Jai-008 (32.75), while the lowest (12.25) from CG Jai-002. The line CG Jai-008 produced the heaviest (1150 g) fruit followed by CG Jai-001 (1068 g) while CG Jai-003 produced the lightest (700 g) fruit. Maximum (38.4 kg) yield/plant was obtained from CG Jai-008 and minimum (10.8 kg) from CG Jai-003. Maximum rind thickness and pulp weight (2.00 cm and 595.5 g, respectively) was noted in CG Jai-010 while the lowest (0.95 cm and 359.5 g, respectively) in CG Jai-005. The highest number and weight of seeds/fruit (111.5 and 53.50 g, respectively) were recorded in CG Jai-008, whereas the lowest (53.00 and 14.38 g, respectively) in CG Jai-002. Maximum edible portion (60.59%) was obtained from CG Jai-007, while the lowest (48.04%) from CG Jai-011. Maximum TSS (10.23%) was recorded from CG Jai-008 followed by CG Jai-009 (9.40%) and CG Jai-007 (9.25%). The lowest TSS was recorded from CG Jai-005 (7.63).

Objectives:

To evaluate the collected pummelo germplasm under research station for selecting the superior one
To evaluate, characterized and documented the collected pummelo germplasm for future utilization
To select superior germplam with respect to yield and quality of fruits and developed more pummelo varieties having higher yield and good quality

Methodology:

After several years of evaluation out of 30 germplasm 11 germplasm were selected and evaluated from 2010-11 to 2013-14 at the Citrus Research Station, Jaintiapur, Sylhet. The experiment was laid out in single row plantation having 4 plants in a row with spacing of 4x4 m². The plants were fertilized in two splits a year; one before rainy season and another after rainy season with 30 kg cow dung, 500 g urea, 400 g TSP and 500 g MoP per plant. Irrigation was done twice in the month of February and March for flower retention and fruit setting. The trunk of the tree was painted with Bordeaux pest in the month of December to prevent gummosis disease. For controlling leaf miner and citrus aphid, citrus psyllid and other pest Imidachloprid (Imitaf @ 0.25ml/L) and Cypermethrin (Cymcare 10 EC@ 1ml/L) was applied once every month. Data in respect of plant height, base girth, canopy spreading (NS & EW), number of fruits per plants, fruit, seed and rind as well as important quality attributes were recorded as per IPGRI descriptors and analyzed by MSTAT-C programme for interpretation the results properly.

Achievement/Findings:

The germplasm CG Jai-001, CG Jai-006, CG Jai-007 and CG Jai-008 were found promising in respect of fruit size, yield, number of seeds, per cent edible portion, TSS and bitterness. These four pummel germplasm might be selected for future crop improvement program.
