An experiment was carried out in pots at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during 23 December, 2002 to 25 May, 2003 to assess the effect of four nitrogen levels viz., T1 (full doze of urea i.e. 215 kg urea ha-1, at one split, at 15 DAT), T2 (full doze of urea at two equal splits, ½ at 15 DAT + ½ 30 DAT), T3 (full doze of urea at two equal splits, ½ at 15 DAT + ½ 55 DAT) and T4 (full doze of urea at three equal splits, ½ at 15 DAT + ½ 30 DAT + ½ at 55 DAT) on growth, yield and yield attributes of boro rice genotypes viz. V1 (Binadhan-5), V2 (Tainan-3) and V3 (Binahdan-6). Almost all the parameters showed the highest values when the plants were treated with T4 and the lowest in T1. Binadhan-5 and Binadhan-6 showed similar performance in respect of most of the parameters but Binadhan-6 produced the highest grain yield and biological yield. Full dose of urea (215 kg urea ha-1) applied at three equal split at 15, 30 and 55 DAT was found to be the most beneficial one for the rice genotypes.

The objective of the study was to find out proper split application of urea fertilizer for optimum growth and yield of boro rice.

An experiment was carried out in pots at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during the period from 23 December, 2002 to 25 May, 2003 to assess the effect of four nitrogen levels viz., T1 (full doze of urea i.e. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design. Each pot contained 7 kg of soils collected from BINA farm. Fertilizers were applied in the experimental pots at the rate of 180, 100 and 20 kg ha-1 in the form of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively. Three 45 day-old seedlings were transplanted in each pot on 6 February 2003. The plants were harvested three times, at 65, 90 days after transplanting and maturity stags of the rice. Data on morphological, yield attributes and yield were recorded. Analysis of variance was done according to the design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Russell, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Plant height, number of tillers hill-1, number of leaves hill-1,leaf area hill-1,(cm2), DM (dry matter) of root, stem and leaves hill-1, TDM (total dry matter) hill-1, chlorophyll content in leaves (at 74 DAT), number of panicle hill-1,length of panicle, number of filled grain panicle-1, 1000-grain weight, grain yield hill-1, biological yield hill-1, and harvest index of rice genotypes were increased over the T1. All the above parameters showed the highest values when the plants were treated with T4 and the lowest in T1. Among the genotypes, Binadhan-5 and Binadhan-6 showed similar performance in respect of most of the parameters but Binadhan-6 produced the highest grain yield and biological yield. Among the treatments, T4 showed the best performance. Tainan-3 showed the least values, in respect of most of the parameters when compared to Binadhan-5 and Binadhan-6. Full dose of urea (215 kg urea ha-1) applied at three equal split at 15, 30 and 55 DAT was found to be the most beneficial one for the rice genotypes.
