Grain Growth Pattern and Yield Performance of Boro Rice Genotypes Under Soil Moisture Stress

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was performed at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during January to May, 2005 to evaluate four boro rice genotypes growth stages under soil moisture stress (40% FC) with a control. Rice genotypes viz. PNR-166, TNDB-100, PNR-381 and R-3027 were included in this study. Total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll a/b ratio, water potential, root, stem, leaf weight and total dry matter / hill decreased with the imposed stress (40% FC). Plant height, 1000-grain weight, grain yield and total dry matter at maturity decreased with stress imposed at booting stage. However, number of panicles decreased with stresses both at tillering and booting stages although stress had no significant effect on the panicle length and harvest index. Under the given stress, higher plant height, root, stem, leaf weight and total dry matter/hill were observed in the genotype PNR-166, while higher 1000-grain weight and grain weight and grain yield in TNDB-100. And also higher plant height, root weight, stem weight, panicle length, total dry matter and harvest index at maturity stage in PNR-166 together R-3027 genotype for higher stem weight and panicle length.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of water stress on growth, yield and yield contributing characters of boro rice genotypes and to identify water stress tolerant genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted with four boro rice genotypes at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during January to May, 2005 to evaluate four boro rice genotypes growth stages under soil moisture stress (40% FC) with a control. Rice genotypes viz., PNR-166, TNDB-100, PNR-381 and R-3027 were included in this study. Total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll a/b ratio, water potential, root, stem, leaf weight and total dry matter / hill decreased with the imposed stress (40% FC). Each pot contained 8 kg of soil collected from BINA farm. Urea 1.72 g, TSP 1.44 g. MP 0.80 g, Gypsum 0.11 g and ZnO 0.21 g pot^-1 were applied following 215-180-100-20-4 kg of urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and ZnO ha^-1 respectively. Forty day old 3 seedlings were transplanted in each puddle pot on 15 January 2005. Data on morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically following two factor experiment in RCBD with the help of MSTAT computer packages (Russell, 1986). The mean values of the treatments were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

Plant height, 1000-grain weight, grain yield and total dry matter of boro rice genotypes at maturity decreased with stress imposed at booting stage. However, number of panicles decreased with stresses both at tillering and booting stages although stress had no significant effect on the panicle length and harvest index. Under the given stress, higher plant height, root, stem, leaf weight and total dry matter/hill were observed in the genotype PNR-166, while higher 1000-grain weight and grain weight and grain yield in TNDB-100. And also higher plant height, root weight, stem weight, panicle length, total dry matter and harvest index at maturity stage in PNR-166 together R-3027 genotype for higher stem weight and panicle length.
