Salinity Tolerance Studies in Two High Yielding Boro Rice Varieties and a Hybrid

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) farm in pots during January to June, 2002 to observe the salinity tolerance of three rice varieties such as Binadhan-6, Sofola (hybrid) and BRRI dhan28. The plants were grown in pot soils under different salinity levels such as control (0.6 dS/m), 4, 6 and 8 dS/m. Plant height, number of leaves/hill, dry matter of leaves/hill, dry matter of stem/hill (g), dry matter of roots/hill (g), number of fertile panicle/hill, number of tillers/hill, number of filled grains/panicle, grain yield/hill, 1000-grain weight, TDM/hill (g), harvest index (HI) were reduced with increase of salinity levels. Binadhan-6 produced the highest plant height, number of tiller/hill, number of leave/hill, dry matter of leaves/hill (g), dry matter of stem/hill (g), dry matter of roots/hill (g), number of fertile panicle/hill, number of filled grain/panicle, grain yield/hill (g), TDM/hill (g) and HI at different growth stages (maximum tillering stage, flowering stage and maturity stage) while Sofola (hybrid) showed the highest 1000-grain weight.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of salinity on morpho-physiological and yield attributes of rice genotypes, to observe the uptake on Na⁺ and K⁺ ions in leaves of the rice genotypes under saline condition and to find out salt tolerant genotype.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) farm in earthen pots during January to June, 2002 to observe the salinity tolerance of three rice varieties such as Binadhan-6, Sofola (hybrid) and BRRI dhan28. The plants were grown in pot soils under different salinity levels such as control (0.6 dS/m), 4, 6 and 8 dS/m. Salinity was induced by adding NaCl salt solution at 28 days after transplanting. Amount of salt calculation for salinity development was done according to Michael (1978) and Ponnamperuma (1984). The experiment was laid out Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Each pot contained 6.5 kg of soil collected from BINA farm. Urea 1.16 g pot^-1, TSP 0.97 g pot^-1 and MP 0.54 g pot^-1 Gypsum 0.11 g pot^-1 and Zn 0.21g pot^-1at the rate of 215-180-100-20-4 kg of urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and ZnO fertilizer per hectare respectively were applied. Seedlings of rice genotypes were transplanted on 15 February 2002. Data on morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically following two factor experiment in RCBD with the help of MSTAT computer packages (Russell, 1986). The mean values of the treatments were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

Plant height, number of leaves/hill, dry matter of leaves/hill, dry matter of stem/hill (g), dry matter of roots/hill (g), number of fertile panicle/hill, number of tillers/hill, number of filled grains/panicle, grain yield/hill, 1000-grain weight, TDM/hill (g), harvest index (HI) were reduced with increase of salinity levels. Binadhan-6 produced the highest plant height, number of tiller/hill, number of leave/hill, dry matter of leaves/hill (g), dry matter of stem/hill (g), dry matter of roots/hill (g), number of fertile panicle/hill, number of filled grain/panicle, grain yield/hill (g), TDM/hill (g) and HI at different growth stages (maximum tillering stage, flowering stage and maturity stage) while Sofola (hybrid) showed the highest 1000-grain weight. From the interaction effect between different salinity levels and variety, Sofola (hybrid) showed minimum performance in relation to plant height at maximum tillering stage and flowering stage, number of tillers/hill at maximum tillering stage and maturity stage, dry matter of leaves/hill (g), dry matter of stem/hill (g), dry matter of roots/hill (g) and TDM/hill (g) at maximum tillering stage and flowering stage, number of fertile panicle/hill, number of filled grains/panicle and HI at maturity stage at the salinity level of 8 dS/m.
