Effect of Soil Moisture Stress on Morpho-physiological and Yield Attributes of Mungbean Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during February to May, 2005 to study the effect of soil moisture stress on morpho-physiological and yield attributes of mungbean genotypes. Two factors-field capacity (70, 50 and 30% field capacity) and genotypes (Binamoog-2, MBM-298, MBM-300, E₄I-901and E₄I-915) were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The yield and yield attributes were generally affected due to soil moisture stress. Plant height, number of branches/plant, number of leaves/plant, leaf area/plant, root dry weight/plant, stem dry weight/plant, leaf dry weight/plant, total dry matter, total chlorophyll, chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b, chlorophyll-a/b ratio, 1000-seed weight, harvest index (HI) and seed yield were decreased but total sugar, reducing sugar increased with increasing soil moisture stress. The highest seed yield/plant was obtained from 70% FC than that of 50% FC and 30% FC. Among the genotypes E₄I-915 produced the highest yield, TDM, HI, 1000-seed weight, total chlorophyll under soil moisture stress condition. The genotype E₄I-901 showed the medium yield, TDM, HI, 1000-seed weight and total chlorophyll. While MBM-300 showed the lowest TDM, HI, 1000-seed weight, total chlorophyll and lowest yield.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to observe the effect of different moisture levels on mungbean genotypes and to identify drought tolerant genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted with mungbean at the pot yard of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during February to May, 2005. Two factors-field capacity (70, 50 and 30% field capacity) and genotypes (Binamoog-2, MBM-298, MBM-300, E_4I-901and E₄I-915) were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Each pot contained 9 kg of soil collected from BINA farm. Fertilizers Urea 0.09 g pot^-1, TSP 0.051 g pot^-1 and MP 0.105 g pot^-1 at the rate of 30 kg N ha^-1, 17 kg P₂O₅ ha^-1and 35 kg K₂O ha^-1were applied. Seeds of mungbean genotypes were sown on 14 February 2005. Water stress was applied at 30 days after sowing. Data on morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically following two factor experiment in RCBD with the help of MSTAT computer packages (Russell, 1986). The mean values of the treatments were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
