Effect of Salt Stress on Growth and Yield Attributes of Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was performed at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during 6 October 2003 to 8 January 2004 to observe the response of three mungbean genotypes (Binamoog-4 and two advanced line, BMX 92007-3 and BMX 94010-11) under different salt stress (control, 3.89 and 7.82 dSm^-1. The experiment was laid out following Randomized Complete Block Design where each treatment replication three times. Plant height, number of leaf, leaf area, total dry matter and partitioning of dry matter in to leaves, stems, and roots; yield contributing characters such as number of pods plant^-1, number of seeds pod^-1, seed weight plant^-1, 1000-seed weight, harvest index were reduced with the increase of salinity levels as compared to control. However, the content of Na⁺ in leaves increased with increasing salinity levels. Plant height and yield attributes like number of pods, number of seeds pod^-1. Seed weight plant^-1, 1000-seed weight, harvest index were the highest in advanced line MNX 94010-11 compared to those in Binamoog-4 and advanced line BMX 92007-3. Potassium content in leaves was not varied among the genotypes but leaves of Binamoog-4 contain the highest amount of Na⁺ compared to that in BMX 94010-11 and BMX 92007-3.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of salinity on morpho-physiological and yield attributes of mungbean genotypes, to determine different mineral ions (Na⁺ and K⁺) content in leaves and to identify the relative salt tolerant ability of the genotypes.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was performed at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) experiment Farm, Mymensingh, during the period from 6 October 2003 to 8 January 2004 to observe the response of three mungbean genotypes (Binamoog-4 and two advanced line, BMX 92007-3 and BMX 94010-11) under different salt stress (control, 3.89 and 7.82 dSm^-1. The experiment was laid out following Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Each pot contained 7 kg of soil collected from BINA farm. Well rotten cow dung 70 g pot^-1 was mixed in the soil at the rate of 10 ton ha^-1. Fertilizers were applied urea 0.175 g pot^-1, TSP 1.21 g pot^-1 and MP 0.35 g pot^-1 corresponding to 25 kg ha^-1urea, 74 kg ha^-1TSP and 50 kg ha^-1 MP. Seeds of mungbean genotypes were sown on 6 October 2003. Salinity was imposed at 36 days after sowing. Data on morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically following two factor experiment in RCBD with the help of MSTAT computer packages (Russell, 1986). The mean values of the treatments were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

All morpho-physiological characters such as plant height, number of leaf, leaf area, total dry matter and partitioning of dry matter in to leaves, stems, and roots; yield contributing characters such as number of pods plant^-1, number of seeds pod^-1, seed weight plant^-1, 1000-seed weight, harvest index were reduced with the increase of salinity levels as compared to control. However, the content of Na⁺ in leaves increased with increasing salinity levels. Plant height and yield attributes like number of pods, number of seeds pod^-1. Seed weight plant^-1, 1000-seed weight, harvest index were the highest in advanced line MNX 94010-11 compared to those in Binamoog-4 and advanced line BMX 92007-3. Potassium content in leaves was not varied among the genotypes but leaves of Binamoog-4 contain the highest amount of Na⁺ compared to that in BMX 94010-11 and BMX 92007-3. Interaction effect between the genotypes and salinity levels appeared significant for most of the studied characters. From the study it can be opined that salt stress reduced all the parameters under different salinity levels. Again among the genotypes advanced line BMX 94010-11 was found as relatively salt tolerant.
