Well Discharges in Response to Aquifer Conditions and Pumping Equipment

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Irrigation wells are capital intensive installations which require efficient utilization to justify the costs. In this context. 12 selected deep tubewells in Muktaqacha Upazila were evaluated in terms of their discharges. Among many factors that affect, well discharges, the aquifer condition and status of pumping equipment associated with the wells were evaluated. It was found that althouqh the groundwater levels in the study area were fairly stable, the well discharges were lower than the design discharges. The evaluation of the pumping equipment showed that the selected pump did not match correctly to the wells and the pumps were being operated at speeds below those specified. It was concluded that putting the right kind of pump and running them at specified speeds would have kept the well discharges to excellent levels in Muktaqacha Upazilla.

Objectives:

To study the performance of some selected tubewells as affected by groundwatar levels, aquifer parameters and selection of pumping equipment.

Methodology:

Field level reconnaissance survey and data collection works were conducted. To study the performance of the selected wells in response to the aquifer parameters and groundwater levels, tube well discharge data for 1986 were measured from the field; such data taken at earlier times were also collected from the local BADC office. And in order to investigate the status of matching of the pumps to the wells. the System Head- Capacity (H Q) curves for aII the 12 wells were developed through series of well tests.
