The Yield Response of Para Grass (brach/aria Mut/ca) to Nitrogen,phosphorus and Potash Fertilizers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A fertilizer trial on para grass was carried out in the Noncacareous Dark Grey Floodplain soil of Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Myrnensingh with three rates of nitrogen (@ 0, 34 and 68 kg/N per hectare from urea). three rates of phosphorus K (@ O. 34 and 68 kg. P105 per hectare from triple superphosphate) and two rates of potassium (@ 0 and 34 kg. K20 per hectare from muriate of potash). The grass was harvested 4 times after 72. 132. 193 and 256 days of planting. The application of nitrogen and phosphorus progressively and significantly - increased the grass yield at all stages of cutting. The potassium application produced a little effect on the yield.

Objectives:

To study the production of para grass in a typical alluvial soil of Bangladesh under different soil fertility conditions of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the Noncalcareous Dark Grey Floodplain soil of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Farm Mymensingh during the months from March to December, 1972. The soil of the experimental land was loam having a pH value of 6. 4. The initial nutrient status of the soil in respect of N. P,06 and KID as obtained from soil analysis Were 0.08, 0.09 and 1.43 per cent respectively. The experiment was laid out in split- plot design. The experimental area was divided into 3 blocks representing 3 replications. Each block was divided into six sub blocks where six PK treatment combinations were placed at random. Each sub- block was again divided into 3 unit plots upon which were superimposed the different doses of nitrogen fertilizers. Each unit plot was 10 X 9 meter. There were 18 fertilizer treatments with 3 rates of nitrogen (@ 0, 34 and 68 kg. N/ha. from urea), 3 rates of phosphorus (@ 0, 34 and 68 kg P2 05 /ha. from triple super phosphate) and 2 rates of potassium (@ 0 and 34 kg K20/ha. from muriate of potash . The cuttings were prepared from mature stems with 3 nodes and planted giving a spacing of 30 em, from hill to hill and 60 cm. from row to row. The grass was harvested 4 times during the period of 256 days. The first cutting was taken 72 days after planting. The second third and fourth cuttings were taken 132, 193 and 256 days after planting respectively .

Achievement/Findings:

The yield increased significantly with increasing rates of nitrogen application .Similar responses of other grasses to nitrogen were also demonstrated. It has been revealed that the phosphorus application had significant effect on the dry matter production of para grass. at all stages of cutting, The yield decreased gradually with progressive cutting stages. The potassium application did not have any: significant effect in producing dry matter yield at first and fourth cutting stages but at the second and third cutting stages the grass yield increased significantly . At the first and fourth cutting stages the uptake of potassium was due to the increased. dry matter yield and nitrogen content and at the second and third cutting stage the uptake was due only to the increased dry matter yield,
