Response of Rice to Different Levels of Zinc Fertilization

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at farmer's field to determine the optimum level of zinc application in aus rice (BR1 ). Six different rates of zinc were used as treatments in four replications. The application of zinc in the form of ZnS0₄ significantly increased both grain and straw yield as well as different yield components except the number of tillers/hill. The application of zinc up to 8 kg/ha increased the grain yield of rice but further addition decreased the same.

Objectives:

To determine the most suitable rate of zinc as ZnSO₄ for rice at the farmers' field.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the farmers' field of village Kanhar under Trishal upazila of Mymensingh district during aus season of 1981 with variety BR1. The soiI of the experimental site was Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain with a textural class of silty loam. The treatments of experiment were 0.6. 8, 10. 12 and 14 kg Zn/ha as ZnSO₄ applied 15 days after transplanting. Each treatment was replicated 4 times having the unit plot size of 500m². The soil was fertilized with a basal dose of 85. 25 and 35 kg/ha N. P and K. respectively. Half of the N and full amount of P and K were applied at the time of land preparation. The rest half of the N was top- dressed in two equal splits, one at 25 and the other at 40 days after transplanting. Forty day-old seedlings were transplanted with 12 cm apart plants in 25 cm apart rows. Hand weeding was done twice to keep -the field free from weeds and Diazinon 14G was applied @ 1.5 kg a. i./ha on May 14. 1981. to minimize pest attack. Data on different yield components were collected from 10 randomly selected hills in each plot and those on grain and straw yield were recorded from -whole plot.
