Dry Matter Consumption and Body Weight Gains in Breeds of Cattle and Buffalo Heifers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effects of dry matter consumption from different sources of roughages on weight gain of fifteen heifers were studied. The average daily dry matter consumption was 3.36,3.19, 3.02, 2.67 and 2.55 kg per 100 kg body weight for Red Sindhi, Sahiwal grade. Ravi-Nilli and Sahiwal breed respectively and the corresponding weekly body weight gains per 100 kg of body weight in the same sequence were 1.91. 2.47, 1.82 2.97 and 1.B3. The dry matter consumption was higher in younger animals of lower body weight and the overall consumption exceeded Morrison's standard. The overall correlation co-efficient between feed consumption and body weight gain for rice straw and green fodder was 0.85.

Objectives:

To observe the dry matter consumption of different breeds of cattle and buffalo heifers in terms of weight gains.

Methodology:

Fifteen heifers of five different breeds were taken in a completely randomized design with five treatments replicated thrice. The experiment was conducted for a period of twelve weeks at the Bangladeqh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The animals under experiment were fed roughages on ad libitum basis with an average of 1 kg of concentrate mixture consisting of wheat bran, crushed khesari and sesame oil cake In the ratio of 4: 3 ; 3: per head per day. One percent common salt was added to the concentrate mixture. All the animals were stachioned separately in a comfortable space and were fed weighed rice straw ad libitum three times daily. Green fodder from different sources were supplied in the same way. The daily left-overs were removed and weighed to find out the actual amount of feed consumed. They were allowed to drink water at their will.
