A Study on the Role of Honeybee in Pollinating Mustard and Sunflower

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In 'mustard' (TS - 72), the number of siliqua per plant, seeds per siliqua and the oil content of seeds were significantly greater in honeybee pollinated plants than those of the control. In 'sunflower' (DS - 1), the number of filled seeds per head and the oil content of seeds were significantly higher in plants foraged by honeybees than those in the plants not foraged by honeybees. There was no significant difference in 100 - seed weight and germination of 'mustard' and 'sunflower' seeds with or without honeybee pollination.

Objectives:

To determine the pollinating role of the honeybees in mustard and sunflower.

Methodology:

The study was carried out at the Central Experimental Station of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Dhaka during rabi season 1982 - 83. 'Mustard' (Brassica campestris) seeds of the cultivar TS - 72 were sown on November 9, 1982 in six compartments of a net house, each measuring 2.85m x 2.80m. At the time of flower initiation each of the three compartments was provided with a hive containing sufficient active honeybees. Other three compartments were not supplied with any hive and were treated as control. Each compartment constituted a replication. Constant observations were made to monitor the activity of the honeybees with sufficient care to prevent entry of any other insect from outside. Similar treatments were also given to the cultivar (DS - 1) of 'sunflower'. Ten 'mustard' plants from each compartment were randomly collected on February 13, 1983 and brought to the laboratory. Crop maturity was tested through visual observations on the colour of the siliqua and the plants under treatments. The siliquae were collected out of 10 plants from each of the replications and average number of siliqua per plant was determined. Hundred siliquae were randomly taken out of the plants from each of the replications and the seeds were separated. The average number of seeds per siliqua was counted and recorded. One thousand seeds were randomly taken from the siliquae of each of the replications and weighed with the help of a Mettler balance. Oil content of seeds from each of the replications was determined by using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) technique. The viability of the seeds of each of the replications was tested by placing 100 seeds in large petridishes using cotton as substrate. Total number of filled seeds were taken out of 10 randomly collected heads from each of the replications to calculate the average number of filled seeds per head. Thousand seed weight, oil content and germination. These parameters were determined by using the procedures as followed in case of mustard.
