Notes on the Bionomics and Development of Sitotroga Cerealellal Olivier (lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) in Stored Rice.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Sitotroga cerealella Oliv., primarily a pest of stored rice, wheat, corn etc. is also known to attack ripe grains in the field in some countries. In Bangladesh, its activities were mainly limited to the storages of unhusked rice. The larva fed and pupated within the kernels. The infested grains were not usually found below 9 in. layer of the rice stored for 6 to !l months. The adult population was present the year round. The highest number was observed in June, and the lowest, in January=-February. This seemed to be related to the warm and cold weather outside the storage during June and January respectively. The life cycle varied from 54 to 57 days with an average of 39•3 days. The shortest life cycle was observed in June and the longest in January. The fecundity was On average 87'3 eggs per female, but the highest number was laid during w inter season.

Objectives:

To study foods, distribution, feeding habits, nature of injury, population abundance, oviposition, larval and adult life in the stored unhusked rice.

Methodology:

Foods and distribution : The larva of S. cerealella feeds on a wide variety of grains both in the field and in storage. They attack and develop in the stored rice, wheat and corn in Bangladesh. They also infest maize, jowar and paddy in the field; peanuts and guinea corn, bran and dried grapes in storage. Since these foods are stored in many places of the world, they have become cosmopolitan in distribution. But, in Bangladesh, they never recorded to attack any crop in the field . Feeding habits and nature of injury: Rice grains were exposed to oviposition by S. cerealella inside 8 oz. glass jars in the laboratory. The oviposite d grains were isolated and the larval feeding habit studied The larva was found to bore into the rice, kernel immediately after eclosion and hence escaped the notice of the storage woners. It started feeding right from the time of entrance and continued until 56.5% of the infested grain was completely obliterated . As the pest fed inside the kernel without showing any surface damage, the supper ficial look did not reveal its presence. However, when the adult emerged from inside, a round emergence hole covered with silken membrane was found on the husk. This was the only external symp- tom of damage to the stored unhusked rice. The feeding started always from the soft embryo of the kernel and proceeded towards its opposite side. In no case was the larva found to bore through the other end of the grain. The actual method of feeding was also detected by a partial dissection of the kernel.
