Stability Analysis for Comparing Different Varieties/genotypes of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Stability analysis of five varieties/genotypes genotype x environment interaction was significant for days to maturity, average fruit weight and fruit yield. Both linear and nonlinear (deviation) components were significant for average fruit weight and days to maturity except fruit yield where nonlinear component was found to be significant. Stability analysis suggested that genotypes Bahar and Ratan stable for fruit yield and Ratan for days to maturity. The other three varieties/genotypes Manik, E-6 and TO- 3 were nustable for all the characters.

Objectives:

To evaluate the stability of some cultivated varieties/genotypes of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture and Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with five tomato varieties/genotypes at BINA farms Mymensingh, Ishurdi and Rangpur during 1995-96 and 1996-97 cropping seasons. The varieties/genotypes were Bahar, E-6, Ratan, Manik, and TG-3, The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications in each environment. Unit plot size was 4m x 3m. Spacing were 50 cm between plants and rows. The experimental plots were fertilized with N, P₂O₅, K₂O @ 200, 150, 100 kg/ha in the form of Urea, TSP and MP respectively together with cowdung @ 5 t/ha. Intercultural operations, such as weeding, irrigation and pesticide applications were followed to ensure normal growth of plants. Data on days to maturity, average fruit weight and fruit yield were taken to study the stability of the above varieties/genotypes.

Achievement/Findings:

Finding the experiment genotype having high mean yield, unit regression and least deviation from regression is considered as stable. According to a variety having wide or good adaptability is one which gives consistently superior performance over several environments. Considering above three criteria Bahar and Ratan could be regarded as stable varieties/genotypes for fruit yield and Ratan also for days to maturity.
