Effect of Zinc and Sulphur on the Yield of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted in the non-calcareous dark grey flood plain soil of Bangladesh (Sonatola series) to study the effect of different levels of zinc and sulphur on the yield of pajam rice. Results obtained show that application of Zn and S increased both grain and straw yields. The highest grain yield (4.04t/ha) was obtained with 10 kg Zn along with 30 kg S /ha. The straw yield was highest ( 5.83 t/ha) in the combination of 5kg Zn and 60kg S/ha.

Objectives:

To study the effect of Zn and S on the yield of rice.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh during the aman season of 1984. The soil belongs to Sonatola series having the characteristics of silt loam in texture, pH 6.8, organic matter content 1.38%, total N 0.11%, Olsen's P 0.6ppm, exchangeable K 0.38% m.e.j 100g, available S 12.5 ppm. and available Zn 1.2 ppm. A randomized block design with six replications was used. The size of each plot was 5m x 4m. Three seedlings of 30 days old paiam rice were planted in each hill with a spacing of 25 cm x 15 cm. Zinc and Sulphur were used at the rates of 5 and 10 kg Zn/ha and 30 and 60kg S/ha from zinc oxide and gypsum respectively. Nitrogen. phosphorus and potassium were used at the rates of 120 kg N/ha. 60kg P₂O₅ and 60kg K_2O/ha. One -third dose of N and full doses of Zn, S. P and K were applied by broadcasting one day prior to transplantation of the seedlings. Another one-third of N was applied after 30 days of transplantation and the rest at pre-booting stage. The plots were maintained with sufficient ,water throughout the growth period and were free of weeds. Insecticide ( Foradon 3G ) was applied at the rate of 16 kg/ha after 50 days of transplantation to control insect attack. The crop was harvested after 116 days of -transplantation. Both straw and grain were dried and weighed.

Achievement/Findings:
