Chemical Control of Sunnbemp Hairy Caterpillar, Agrina Syringa Cr

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The insecticides, Accothion 50 EC and Elsan 50 EC in four different doses were tested on the sunned hairy caterpillars. The effective doses against the third and fourth instar caterpillars were found to be 157.4 and 264.3 ppm respectively for Accothion and 295.9 and 410 ppm for Elsan, Accothion relatively provided better control than Elsan.

Objectives:

To examine the chemical control sunbeam hairy caterpillar.

Methodology:

Accothion 50-EC and Elsan 50-BC at doses of 200, 100, 5O and 25 ppm were tested in the laboratory against third and fourth ins tar caterpillars. During the experiment, leaf dipping and spraying techniques were followed. The insecticidal solution of different doses were made in water, In the leaf dipping test, fresh sunbeam leaves dipped in the solution for about S minutes were dried under fan. The treated leaves were fed to the caterpillars in petridishes (15 cm x 2.5cm). Again the caterpillars were sprayed by a continuous hand sprayer and were allowed to feed fresh leaves. In each case 8 caterpillars were used for each treatment' having three replications. The mortality was recorded after 24 hours of the application. The data were statistically analyzed to find out the effectiveness of the insecticides.

Achievement/Findings:

The third instar caterpillars of Argina syringa Cr. died upto 75% and 66.66% in Accothion and Elsan respectively at a dose of 100 ppm . The mortality per cent ages or corresponding doses of Accethion were higher than Elsan. The cater- pillars did not show any significant hetero- geneity of their mortality in relation the different doses of the tested insecticides. To control 90% of the cater- pillars in the third instar stage, 264.3 and 295.9 ppm of Accothion and Elsan might be required. The extent of damage done by the fourth instar caterpillars to sunnhemp plants is greater than the earlier instal. Consequently. the dosage range of the tested insecticides was higher . About 95.83 % and 75% caterpillars were killed by 200 ppm of Accothion and Elsan respectively.
