A Study on the Food and Feeding of Rohtee Cotio (ham)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The food and feeding habits of Rohtee cotio (Ham) with respect to quality and quantity of food consumed and their diel patterns of feeding were studied over a period of six months after raising them in a pond of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. A total of 79 fishes were examined to determine the quality and quantity of food eaten and a total of 107 fishes collected every three hours for 24 h for the determination of diel patterns of feeding. The fish species was an omnivore with preference for debris and zooplankton. The food categories recorded in the stomachs of the fish were: Cyanophyceae Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Higher plant, Debris, Rotifera, Copepoda, Cladocera, Insect, Sand and Mud. The most important food item was debris. Next to debris important food items were animal foods and sand and mud. The plant foods were taken by the fish was found to be a continuous feeder without showing any definite feeding preference at day or night. The fish showed greater feeding intensity reduced to a great extent after sunrise falling to a minimum value at 1200 h. However, the fishes did not show change in preference for food items in the diet with the change in hour. The patterns of intake of different food items were the same throughout a 24 h period.

Objectives:

To determine the quality and quantity of food eaten and a total of 107 fishes collected every three hours for 24 h for the determination of diel patterns of feeding.

Methodology:

The fish samples for stomach analysis were collected from pond No. 4, Bangladesh Agricultural University Fish Farm, Mymensingh. The surface area of the pond was estimated as 8 acres. Rainfall is the main source of water of this pond. The samples were collected once every month starting from September, 1980 to February, 1981. The collection was made randomly in the pond with the help of a cast net having a mesh size 1.2 cm. To study the diel patterns of feeding, the sampling was done in the month of October and December only. The collections were done at every 3 h beginning at 300 h and continued for 2400 h. Immediately after collection, the fishes were preserved in 10% formalin solution with proper labeling. A total of 79 fishes were examined for qualitative and quantitative studies of food, and 107 fishes were examined to determine the diel patterns of feeding. The stomach contents were analyzed by percentage of frequency of occurrence method and points method. All the food items were condensed into 10 categories.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the present study indicated that debris was the most dominant food groups in the gut contents of the fish among all the food groups throughout 24 h period. Next to debris, animal food items Rotifera, Copepoda, Cladocera, Insect, Sand and Mud the most important food items of the fish in the gut contents of 24 h collection. Through the plant food items were of small amount but they were found to occur in all collection. The results indicated that through the fish showed considerable variation in taking the different amounts of food item with hour of day, yet the fish did not show any tendency to the change of its food items with the hange in hour. During the study the genera of nematodes recorded were Diplogaster, Bastiana Choronogaster, Alimus, Anaplectus, Rhadolaimus, prismatolaimus, Pangrolaimus Tribolus. The percentage of occurrence was 62.68%. These nematodes were always found in undigested form. So it may be concluded that they were not fish food. They may have been parasitic or symbiotic form. The nature of their association with the fish was not studied.
