Identification of Adulterated Fertilizers at Farm Level.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The book “Sarejamine Vejal Sar Sanaktakaraner Paddhati” i.e., “Methods of Identification of Adulterated Fertilizers at Farm Level” is a worthy outcome of the collective experiences of dozens of dedicated soil scientists of SRDI. SRDI has brought forth the field book written in Bengali and described some easy methods that would be useful for agricultural extension agents, fertilizer dealers, NGO workers or even innovative farmers in determining adulterated fertilizers. The book has two chapters. A total of 13 chemical fertilizers such as Urea, TSP, SSP, DAP, FMP, MOP, SOP, mixed fertilizer NPKS, ZnSO_4, chelated Zn, solubor, boric acid and organic manure have been discussed in the first chapter. For example, pure TSP fertilizers have an acidic taste with bitter odor and make clear solution with water; whereas adulterated one has no such taste or odor or makes turbid solution. Second chapter deals with necessary instruments for testing adulterated fertilizers that are easily available and specified fertilizer laboratories addition to SRDI labs and their addresses followed by Fertilizer Inspection Report and Fertilizer Sample Label/Tag. Sufficient numbers of photo illustrations with narrative descriptions of the methods made the book easy to grasp

Objectives:

The book has been prepared as part of the core research of fertilizer quality control program of SRDI in the framework of the National Fertilizer Quality Control Program. The publication of it is supported by Soil Resources Management, Analytical and Farmer’s Services Project. Specific objectives of the work were: to get ideas about the purity of fertilizers without chemical analysis; for easy identification of adulterated fertilizers by agricultural extension stuff, fertilizer dealers, NGO workers and even by innovative farmers through simple examination methods; to raise awareness against adulterated fertilizers at the level of farmers and fertilizer dealers.

Methodology:

The book “Sarejamine Vejal Sar Sanaktakaraner Paddhati” i.e., “Method of Identification of Adulterated Fertilizers at Farm Level” is a worthy outcome of the collective experiences of dozens of dedicated soil scientists of Soil Resource Development Institute of Bangladesh specially engaged in fertilizer analysis and monitoring of fertilizer use since 1994. It seeks to enrich the body of knowledge related to quarantine adulterated fertilizer import, sell, supply and production, an important agricultural issue in Bangladesh. It was a long felt need of the concern people to have a reference book that could be use to determine the adulterated fertilizer at farm level. Keeping these things in mind, SRDI has brought forth the field book written in Bengali and described some easy methods that would be useful for agricultural extension agents, fertilizer dealers, NGO workers or even innovative farmers in determining adulterated fertilizers. At final stage, the responsibility of constructing the manuscript was laid on Dr. Gazi Md. Zainal Abedin and Md. Lutfar Rahman. Mr. Mainul Ahsan, former Director SRDI, was responsible for editing the book. Later on, the book has been revised and further edited under the leadership of Md. Nazmul Hasan, PSO, Central Lab, SRDI. Mr. Jalal Uddin Md. Shoaib, Md. Hamidul Haq, Md. Khorshed Alam, Mr. Monfique Ahmed Chowdhury, Mrs. Mosfeka Sultana, Mrs. Tahmina Khanam, Md. Saifur Rahman, Mrs. Neelima Akter Kohinoor, Mrs. Abida Sultana, and Md. Habibur Rahman of SRDI deserve appreciation for this job. All the information provided in this book yielded from the long experiences of SRDI in the field of fertilizer sample analysis, observations and research-results. Sufficient numbers of photo illustrations with narrative descriptions of the methods have been given. Funds from Soil Resources Management, Analysis and Farmer’s Services (SRMAF) Project were used for publication of the manuscript.

“Methods of Identification of Adulterated Fertilizers at Field Level” is yielded from the long experiences of SRDI in the field of fertilizer sample analysis, observations and research-results. It has fulfilled a long felt need of the concern people to have a reference book that could be use to determine the adulterated fertilizer at farm level so as to control the import, sell, use, and production of adulterated fertilizers. The book is written in Bengali and described some easy methods that would be useful for agricultural extension agents, fertilizer dealers, NGO workers or even innovative farmers in determining adulterated fertilizers. Sufficient numbers of photo illustrations with narrative descriptions of the methods made the book an easy one to grasp for all types of readers. It is expected that this research publication will play an important role in controlling production, marketing, importing and use of adulterated fertilizers by fertilizer factories, fertilizer dealers, importers and farmers, respectively. Thus it will help maintaining soil health and eventually help in increased crop production of the country.
