Effects of Spacings of Castor Plant on Growth and Developmen of Eri-silkworm (p. Ricini Hutt.).

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Laboratory experiment was conducted to ascertain the effects of spacing of castor plant (GOB) on the growth and development of Eri-Silkworm. Philosamia ricini Hutt. Among the five spacing given to the Castor plant ( 1.8 m x t 8 m, 1.5 m x 1.6m,12mx 12 m, 0.9mx1.6m.and 0.9mx0.9m), the leaves of the 0.9mx 15m seem to be the best for giving high silk production.

Objectives:

To select an optimum spacing a dominant factor upon which food quality of Castor plant depends for commercial silk production.

Methodology:

To carry out the experiment. the Castor variety, Green Double Bloom (GOB ) was grown in the field maintaining five different spacings viz. 1.8m x 1. 8m, 1. 5rn x 1.5, 1.2m x 1.2m, 0.9m x 1.5m, 0 9m x 0.9m. In each treatment. similar intercultural operations were done. To ascertain the effect of these spacinq of the Castor piant (GDB) on the growth and development of Eri-silkworm. Philosamia ricini Hutt the experiment was conducted in May. 1985 under laboratory conditions of mean temperature 28°C, relative humidity 85 % ). Just after hatching of eggs freshlv chopped tender leaves of each treatment were provided separately in five small bamboo trays ( 0. 3 m dia. ) to the first ins tar larvae for their feeding. After first moulting 50 of second instar larvae were randomly selected from each tray and were placed separately in five larger bamboo trays (0.6 x 0.3 x 0.07m³, provided with tender leava of each treatment separately. The third instar larvae were fed on older immature leaves while fourth and fifth instar larvae were fed on mature leaves. Each treatment was replicated thrice and each replication comapri- sed the mean of 30 individuals. To maintain uniformity, each replication was provided with 4 feeding a day at approximatelv equal intervals of six hours. Larval length and weight were measured before spinning. The observed data were analysed following the principles of Completely Randomized Design. The significant results indicated by F-test were rendered to Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (DMR- Test) for comparison among different treatments.
