Effect of Succinic Acid 2, 2-dimethylhydrazide on the Growth and Development of Bottle Gourd.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of Succinic acid 2, 2-dimethylhydrazide (Alar) on the growth and development of bottle gourd was investigated. The growth regulator slightly reduced the length of the internodes but did not affect the total length of the stems, increased the number of male and female flowers by an average of 19 and 50 per cent respectively. decreased the rate of growth of the fruits and the number of seeds per fruit significantly, Effect of Alar was more pronounced at 4000 ppm than at 2500 and l000 ppm. A majority of the fruits produced by the treated plants had persistent style and stigma upto maturity.

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of Succinic acid 2, 2-dimethylhydrazide (Alar) on the growth and development of bottle gourd.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural University during the winter season of 1972-73, Bottle gourd plants of an unnamed variety were raised in hills. each hill being provided with a square plot measuring 20' x 20'. The experiment was laid out in the randomized block be sign with four replications. Each block was divided into four plots (hills) to which the four concentrations of Alar used were assigned randomly. The concentrations were 0,1000. 2500 and 4000 ppm. There were two plants in each hill and they were allowed to climb on overhead bamboo frames erected on each plot. The plants were treated with Alar twice, first when they developed 5 to 6 true leaves and again five weeks later. Aqueous solutions of the growth regulator Were sprayed on the foliage of the plants in the form of a fine mist. Effect of Alar on the growth and development of the plants was evaluated by the length of the internodes, elongation of the stems, number of male and female flowers and the pattern of their formation and the number and characteristics of the fruits. Observations Were also made to see whether the plants developed any abnormality in their morphylogy and physiology.
