Effect of Water Stress on Growth, Yield and Yield Contributing Characters of Transplanted Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during August to December of 2001 to evaluate three transplant aman rice genotypes under moisture stress. Two local cultivars e.g. Hoglapata and Ghunshi and a mutant M-250-124 were included in this study. The thrice soil moisture levels viz. 100 FC (Control), 60 FC and 30 FC were imposed at 35 days after transplanting and continued up to maturity of the genotypes. Growth and yield components as well as the yield were significantly influenced with the decrease of soil moisture levels. Among the genotypes, M-250-124 produced the highest yield, TDM, HI and medium number of panicles, 1000-grain weight with the shortest panicle length under water stress condition. Hoglapata caused medium yield, TDM, HI and the highest number of panicles, the longest panicle and 1000-grain weight but the lowest filled grains per panicle. Ghunshi showed the lowest TDM, HI, 1000-grain weight, lower yield and medium panicle length under stress condition.

Objectives:

The objective of the study was to evaluate aman rice cultivars for water stress tolerance.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in plastic pots at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during August to December of 2001. The soil was collected from BINA farm. A total of 81 pots (3 genotypes x 3 moisture levels x 3 replications x 3 harvests) were prepared with 3.5 kg sun dried soils in each pot and were placed under the shade of polyethylene sheet. The soils were fertilized with 315 mg Urea, 280 mg TSP, 210 mg MP and 17.5 mg Gypsum per pot and were incorporated thoroughly so that it gets 90-80-60-5 Kg of N, P₂O₅, K₂O and S per hectare, respectively. Urea was applied in three equal splits. Two local transplant aman rice cultivars- Hoglapata and Ghunshi and a mutant M-250-124 developed at BINA, Mymensingh were included in this experiment. Three seedlings aged 27 days old were transplanted in each puddled pot on 12 August, 2001. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Field capacity of the soils used in the experiment was determined through Gravimetric method. Water stress treatments i.e., 60 and 30% FC were imposed at 30 days after transplanting and it was continued up to maturity. However, 100% FC was always maintained in control pots. A total of three samplings were made at panicle initiation, flowering and maturity stages of the crop. At maturity, the grains were allowed to sundry. After drying, the data on yield components and yield was recorded. The collected data were analyzed with statistical program MSTAT-C of Russell (1986). The mean differences were compared with Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).
