Correlation and Path Analyses in Parents and F3 of Brassica Juncea X B. Campestris

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Correlation and path coefficient analysis were done in B. juncea, B. campestris and their F₃ populations. In parent BAU- M/7 (B. Juncea, positive and significant correlations were found between seed weight/ plant and number of primary branches/ plant, secondary branches/ plant and siliquae/ plant. In 'Sampad' (B. campestris) seed weight/ plant had strong positive significant correlation with number of siliquae/ plant, and 1000- seed weight. Positive significant correlations were also found between number of siliquae/ plant and 1000- seed weight and between siliqua length and number of seeds/ siIiqua. In F₃ populations, seed weight/ plant had positive significant association with number of siliquae/ plant, primary branches/ plant, secondary branches/ plant, plant height, seeds/ siliqua, 1000- seed weight and days to maturity. Path coefficient analysis showed that the direct effect of the number of primary branches/ plant (0.499) on seed/ yield in B. Junces parent was much stronger than other characters. But in B. campestris, number of siliquae (0. 577) and number of seeds/ siliqua (0.492) had strong direct effect. In F₃, number of siliquae/ plant had the maximum direct contribution (0.833) to yield. This suggests that influence of B. campestris was more than B. juncea on F₃. Residual effect of F₃ was lower than that of the parents.

Objectives:

To studies on interrelationship among different yield contributing characters and their direct and indirect effects on yield.

Methodology:

The study includes two parental varieties BAU- M/ 7 (B. juncea) and 'Sampad' (B. campestris) and 58 F₃ lines derived from interspecies cross between these two parents. They were sown on 12 November, 1979 in a randomized block design in 4- row plots (300 x 120 cm) with 4 replications at Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm. Row x plant distance were 30 x 15 cm. Data on days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, number of primary branches/ plant, number of secondary branches/ plant, number of siliquae/ plant, siliqua length, seeds/ siliqua, seed weight/ plant and 1000- seed weight were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot. For correlation coefficient the mean values were taken from F₃ lines and data of 40 plants were used from each parent. Path analysis were done separately for the parents and the F₃ lines and the characters number of primary branches/ plant, number of siliquae/ plant, number of seeds/ siliqua, 1000 seed weight and seed weight/ plant were included.
