Effect of Fertilizers and Dates of Planting on the Incidence of Blackleg and Soft Rot of Potato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out to observe the effect of different levels of N P.K. fertilizers and two dates of planting on the occurrence of Blackleg and Soft rot diseases of Potato. The Blackleg infection was first observed in 5 to 6 weeks after planting. and dates of planting did not show significant difference. Significantly less Blackleg plants were observed when P was applied compared to control. When progeny tubers were tested for soft rot significantly more disease developed in early planted crop than in late planted one. The effect of nitrogen at higher levels significantly decreased the soft rot incidence in potato.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of different levels of N P.K. fertilizers and two dates of planting on the occurrence of Blackleg and Soft rot diseases of Potato.

Methodology:

Seed size tubers (30-55 mm) of blackleg and soft rot sucseptibls cv, Ulster Sceptre were selected and sprouted 3-4 weeks in a well ventilated place at room temperature. The tubers were planted in two locations at Newforge. one in April ( early planting) the other in June (late planting) in the year 1981, each with a 43 factorial design of sixty- four fully randomized row plots. Records of germination of seed through soil and blackleg infection were done weekly until the crop was burnt down ( haulm destroyed ). The infected plants were marked' with cane sticks. The percentage of the plants with blackleg in each treatment was calculated. For soft rot inducement, twenty progeny tubers from each treatment bulk in both trials' were sampled the week following harvest by tuber immersion method as described. Each sample of twenty tubers was divided into four lot,' each of five tubers, placed in plastic nets and weighed before incubation under water at 25⁰C. After 5 days each lot of five tubers was washed to remove the soft rot, dried and reweighed. The percentage rut in each lot was calculated and the data analysed.
