Effect of Intercropping Potato Wheat and Radish with Tobacoo

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at the Tobacco Research Station, Burirhat Farm, Rangpur during the years from 1980-81 to 1982-83 to study the possibility and advantage of growing potato. wheat and radish as intercrop with tobacco. The intercrops were potato (cardinal). wheat ( Sonalika) and radish (Mini early). The combination of tobacco and radish produced the highest total yield of 11.52 tons/he with an average LER value of 1.36 indicating 36% more intensive land use than monoculture. The second highest yield of 8.22 tons/ha was produced from the combination of tobacco and potato with an average LER value of 1.37. No significant differences was found between the yield of tobacco when it was grown as sole crop or inter- cropped with potato. The yield of tobacco was lowest ( 1.63 tons/ha ) when inter cropped with radish. Tobacco potato combination gave the highest net income per hectare (Tk. 17.793.00) against a return of 12.652.00 for tobacco grown as sole crop. The same combination differed significantly with the other and produced the cost: benefit ratio of 1 : 2.1. Tobacco and radish combination produced tr.e cost: benefit ratio of 1 : 1.95 and ranked second in net income of Tk. 13.656.00 per hectare. Next highest net income per hectare (Tk. 12,652.00) was obtained from tobacco grown alone with cost: benefit ratio of 1: 1.93 Tobacco and potato proved to be the best combination in terms of L E R and net income per hectare although it involved the largest investment.

Objectives:

To study the possibility and advantage of growing potato, wheat and radish as intercrop with tobacco.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Tobacco Research Station, Burirhat Farm, Rangpur during the years from 1980-81 to 1982-83. One promising variety of Cigarette tobacco namely, Sesmaria was selected for the experiment.The intercrops were potato (cardinal). wheat ( Sonalika). and radish (Mini early). The size of unit plot was 6m x 4.5m. In tobacco and intercrop combination, NPK were applied at the rate of 50:50, 45 kg/ha. Total PK and half of N were applied at the time of final land preparation. The plots also received the remaining half of N as side dressing after 40 days. The principal crop (tobacco) was transplanted at a spacing of 45cm and 105 cm between plants and rows respectively. One row of potato and two rows of wheat and radish were planted in between tobacco. Wheat and radish were thinned after 20-25 days to the desired population. Weeding and irrigation were done as and when necessary. Data on average yield per plot were recorded for three successive years and statistically analysed. To evaluate the benificial effect of intercropoinq tobacco with other crops land equivalent ratio (LER) was calculated for each combination.

Achievement/Findings:

Tobacco potato combination gave the highest net income per hectare (Tk. 17.793.00) against a return of 12.652.00 for tobacco grown as sole crop. Tobacco potato combination may be beneficial for the farmers having moderate resources.
