Field Reaction of Advanced Mutants and Strains of Winter Mungbean to Yellow Mosaic, Cercospora Leaf Spot and Powdery Mildew

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field reaction of ten advanced mutants and strains of winter mungbean along with two check varieties Binamoog-1 and MB-63 to Yellow mosaic (MYMV), Cercospora leaf spot (CLS) (Cercosporo cruenta and C canescens) and Powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni) was evaluated during winter seasons of 1995-96 and 1996-97. The induced mutants 2a (3) was susceptible and rest of the materials showed moderately susceptible reaction to Yellow mosaic. The strain MC-38 was moderately resistant and the other materials showed moderately susceptible reaction to CLS except MB-63 which was highly susceptible. The induced mutants and strains MC- 07, MC-38, MC-65, Mut-2a (3) and Binamoog-1 were moderately resistant and rest of the materials showed moderately susceptible reaction to Powdery mildew.

Objectives:

To identify the sources of resistance against these major diseases under natural epiphytotic field conditions.

Methodology:

Ten advanced mutants and strains of winter mungbean along with Cercospora leaf spot tolerant cultivar, Binamoog-1 and a susceptible strain MB- 63 were evaluated against Yellow mosaic (MYMV), Cercospora leaf spot (Cercospora cruenta and C. canescensi and Powdery mildew Erysiphe polygoni) under natural epiphytotic conditions in the field during the winter seasons of 1995-96 and 1996-97. The experiments were conducted in randomized complete block design with three replications at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture sub-station farm. Ishurdi, where the occurrence of the diseases in the previous years was common with severe infections of each disease had been observed. The fertilizers were applied @ 20 kg N. 35 kg P₂0₅ and 30 kg K₂0 per hectare ar the time of final land preparation. The seeds of each mutant and strain were sown in five-row plots of 2m x 1.2m size each. Row to row and plant to plant distances were maintained at 30 cm and 10 cm, respectively. Intercultural operations were done when necessary but spraying of insecticides and fungicides were deliberately avoided to encourage build-up of the white fly population and the inocula of Cercospora leaf spot and Powdery mildew pathogens throughout the experimental field. The incidence of each disease was recorded by considering all the plants per plot for each mutant and strain. The severity of ten randomly selected infected plants of each mutant and strain for Yellow mosaic, Cercospora leaf spot and Powdery mildew were assessed two weeks before harvest. Plants for Yellow mosaic, Cercospora leaf spot and Powdery mildew severity were assessed by following an indices (0-9) described. The highest score obtained during the two years trial was considered for final grading of each test material.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the materials tested, this strain can be used in cross breeding programme for the development of multiple disease resistant cultivar of mungbean in Bangladesh. Though the yield of MC-284 showed highest among the tested materials, its reaction to all the Major diseases was moderately susceptible. This stain of mungbean can be used as one of the parent in cross breeding programme for the improvement of mungbean cultivars.
